Volunteer: Offer your time to local shelters, food banks, or community kitchens. Every little bit helps! 3. We are thrilled to announce that Shelter has joined the Magpie family. Shelter is on the frontline of the fight against homelessness, and we couldn’t be more revved up to collaborate with them in their mission to ensure everyone has a place to call home. Their latest report reveals a shocking reality: overall there are now a record 117,450 homeless households living in temporary accommodation in England – the highest figure ever and up 12% in a year. These are more than just numbers—they represent lives in need of urgent help. The income generated by Shelter’s retail stores play a crucial role in funding the support, advice, and legal services that make a real difference for those affected. At Magpie, we believe in the power of creative behaviour change to drive positive impact. Our goal is to amplify Shelter’s message, increase donations to their stores, and ultimately help them make an even greater impact. 🚨 Urgent Action Needed: This season is hard enough, let's lend a helping hand for our Neighbors on the Street 🚨 Homelessness already presents immense challenges, but the additional strain of winter conditions compounded by the threat of losing winter survival equipment and medications, without adequate and safe spaces to sleep, can be life-threatening. On a given night, there are generally 1,537 shelter beds for individuals and 89 rooms for families in Albuquerque. Meanwhile, the most recent Point in Time count reported that there are at least 2,734 people experiencing homelessness. The situation is worsening, and we can’t stand by and watch. This also includes National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 15-22), a chance to spotlight these critical issues impacting our communities. At BEDS Plus, we’ve seen firsthand how the housing crisis continues to grow, affecting more people in the places where we live and work. Over the past year, BEDS Plus has helped change the lives of more than 5,000 people, offering essential services, support, and paths to stability. Did you know that the average age of death for men experiencing homelessness is just 45, and for women, it’s even lower at 43? These shocking statistics highlight how critical it is to support those in need. Here are some simple ways you can help people experiencing homelessness this winter: 🧥 Donate warm clothing - Instead of taking your unwanted coats, jumpers, scarves, hats or sleeping bags to the charity shop, consider dropping them off at your local homeless shelter. Don’t have anything to give? Check with the shelter for specific needs and pick up a few items from a charity shop to donate. ☕ Provide food and a warm drink - A hot drink and a filling meal can provide a moment of comfort and the energy needed to face cold nights. 💬 Start a conversation - People experiencing homelessness often go days without speaking to anyone.
