Why is hands on experience more valuable than a degree outside of legal and medical fields? In a college degree program, a student takes up to two full years of career relevant courses. The other two are spent on general education courses, electives, and other various required courses by the college itself. A college degree indicates up to 2 years of relevant experience. Someone like me who has no degree but has 4 years of experience is more likely to be able to achieve goals and metrics because we know how the actual process of the job works. This isn’t just for marketing which is my specialty. This can apply to business, economics, political careers, and more. Next time you’re looking at candidates or looking to hire, look at 2 years hands on experience as being the equivalent of a degree. That’s the likely amount of time someone with a bachelors degree has spent learning their specific career field.

DEGREE OR NO DEGREE I was having a conversation with a client today who wanted a Business Development Manager to join their team. They wanted 5+ years experience within the industry and Degree educated. I questioned the client on this. Do they really need a Degree for this role if you are looking for an experienced person? Will it make a difference? The client pondered on this and we both decided this actually was not necessary for this particular role so, we removed this expectation. I would love to know your thoughts! Yes, a Degree is definitely needed for some roles. I certainly wouldn't want a Doctor or a Lawyer who is not Degree educated. 90% of the jobs advertised on LinkedIn do NOT require a degree. And yet 90% of the jobs advertised on LinkedIn ask for one. Personally, I don't care whether you have a degree or not - I care whether you can do the job. Medicine, Law and other professions that DO require a degree aside... Should Employers require candidates to have a degree when the job they're advertising doesn't actually require one? We really should rethink how necessary a degree is to be successful in a specific role today.
