If you really want to win in 2024, PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS! I played football in high school (# 33 below). My position was middle linebacker and for those that don’t know, middle linebackers call plays, direct the defense, make tackles, fill defensive gaps, attack quarterbacks, defend passes and more. It is a position requiring brains as much as it requires brawn and athleticism.
Being only 5’11 and 200 lbs in high school, I remember wishing like hell I was at least 6’1 and 225 lbs with a 4.4 second 40 yd dash. I figured I’d be a monster on the field and pretty much unstoppable. Each year I was checking for growth spurts like “C’mon let this year be it.”
Then my junior year, it clicked. I told myself, “Kenneth you’re probably not going to be D1 college linebacker size or have D1 speed. Both of those are outside of your control. What is in your control is how hard you work and how you utilize YOUR God given skillset.” I figured out that for what I lacked in natural physical ability, I made up in mental ability. So, I just doubled down on that. I studied film and tendencies. I got my blocking reads down to muscle memory so that I rarely had missteps, made few mistakes, and could easily avoid being blocked.
The results were phenomenal! I became one of the top 3 tacklers in the city! Since I knew tendencies and could quickly make my reads, I didn’t have to be as strong or as fast as other people. I could break down a play, shed a block, and be in the backfield making a tackle before anybody really knew what was going on. I looked fast on film because I thought fast and reacted faster.
Playing to MY strength rather than focusing on what typically made other people successful in position earned me the city’s Defensive MVP my senior year and a scholarship to Texas Southern University here in Houston.
Now think about the magnitude of this. This mindset shift brought me to Houston.... HOUSTON yall! The city where I went to law school, met my wife, started my family, and both of my businesses!
Playing to my strengths LITERALLY changed the entire course of my life.
Now ask yourself… how can it change yours?
