Politics in the Pub: Our Prison System is this Tuesday. Having the morning off, I thought I'd share my thoughts on this event.
I'm a little embarrassed that it took so long to cover the prison system. Rob and I usually select our topics based on three factors: 1. Audience requests, 2. Timeliness, 3. Special interest (Rob's a greeny and I'm a sociologist). And yet, the topic still took us five years to get to.
Why is that? There are countless topics to cover - we get so many requests from people who think their topic is the MOST important, the ONLY one, and so the couple of requests to cover prisons over the last five years kept getting pushed down line.
And yet I can only imagine how important this topic is for those impacted by the prison system. To worry about the safety a loved one in prison... To not know what life will be like when you go in or come out the other side, other than likely very hard indeed.
Last year I recieved an email from Kimberely, who occasionally attends Politics in the Pub and also happens to be one of my sociology students from years ago. Kimberely requested that we cover prisons and gracefully waited the many months for us to complete the other topics we'd committed to (thanks Kimba!).
Kimberely will be speaking at tomorrow's event, alongside Mervyn Eades (CEO of the Ngalla Maya Aboriginal Corporation) and Lorraine Pryor (Founder of Voice of Hope). What a lineup!
This is an opportunity for people who know next to nothing about our prison system to hear from genuine experts. It's also an opportunity for those who know plenty, but rarely have the chance to chat about it, to come and share with community.
I'm really excited for this one... and (as the MC) a little nervous. Please consider coming along. See you at the Local!
