20 years fly's by!
While walking on the beach early this morning, I realised it was just 20 years back that I joined Rockend as CEO and I remembered many of the great people that worked in the organisation and the the thousands of customers that chose to implement our software. Business owner Tony Maple-Brown had the confidence to step back and allow a competent team of leaders build a successful business that became recognised for award winning customer service, effective products, excellent training and a highly engaged workforce.
Although Rockend has since been acquired by MRI, I am sure that the culture we built still plays a part in the bigger global firm.
During my walk three key learning came to mind worth passing on to any reader who wants to build a successful and sustainable business:
- Always focus on customer success as the primary purpose of the business. Without customers the business will not grow and allow you to invest in people, product and processes. Obvious! but sometimes overlooked.
- Business owners, CEO's and GM's do not have all the answers. Seek to network with other business leaders to gain new ideas. In my time at Rockend I was a member of The Executive Connection (TEC) and since then I have chaired CEO groups to share and build knowledge.
- You need a business model or framework as a guide to help implement new ideas. I had the benefit of working in large organisations before Rockend, so joined with new concepts we could quickly adopt. later we used the Customer Service Institute of Australia (CSIA) framework to build a better business. More recently I have researched a broad range of business practices and believe that many medium and larger organisations could adopt the principles developed in the Australian Business Excellence Framework as a template for their organisation. The framework addresses core practices from leadership to measuring results essential for all organistions.
I could add a few more suggestions and will in future posts, but as a start please explore your opportunities to network with other business leaders and do some reading of the ABEF.

2moHe was very inspirational. Sometimes we stand in our own way of getting what we REALLY want. Once we identify the mental blocks and then consciously taking action to overcome them, we take ownership of what we achieve.
