I was honored to watch the presentation by Dr. Jonathan Arenberg, who has been involved with astronomical programs such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), has given lectures and presentations on the JWST. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) represents NASA’s latest leap forward in astrophysics research, having embarked on its monumental journey on Christmas Day, 2021. Now fully operational in science mode, the JWST is tasked with a series of ambitious science goals that promise to expand our understanding of the universe. This talk aims to delve into the core objectives of the JWST, which include capturing the universe’s first light, understanding the assembly of galaxies, exploring the birth of stars, and scrutinizing planets and exoplanets. A key focus is on how the JWST's design intricately aligns with its mission requirements, enabling unprecedented performance levels necessary for accomplishing its ambitious goals. We will explore the telescope’s unique architectural elements, highlighting the innovative solutions that address the intricate challenges of constructing and deploying the largest telescope ever built for space. Particular attention will be paid to the engineering hurdles overcome during its development, with a special emphasis on the selection and utilization of materials properties that ensure the JWST’s functionality and longevity in the harsh conditions of space. The presentation will conclude with an overview of some of the initial science results obtained from the JWST. These early findings not only demonstrate the telescope's potential to transform our understanding of the cosmos but also mark the beginning of a new era in space exploration. Through the lens of humanity’s most powerful space telescope, we stand on the precipice of uncovering the mysteries of the universe, from its earliest moments to the complex processes that govern the formation and evolution of celestial bodies. Canada's MDA Space has been awarded by the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada to: "support the development, construction and integration of game-changing radio telescope technology for the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), an international space exploration and astronomy project that seeks to further our understanding of the formation and evolution of the universe." What is impressive and commendable especially, is that as it's one of the "most ambitious ground-based astronomy project ever undertaken", and with 10 countries involved in this project, it shows how global collaboration efforts like these are crucial to make these types of project happen. The intergovernmental organization along Canada includes: Australia, China, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. 🔭🇵🇹 The Portuguese telescope, Paranal Solar Espresso Telescope (#PoET), will soon give us access to unique data about the star at the centre of the Solar System that no other telescope in the world can obtain. 🚀 The Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA) announces the development of the PoET, an innovative solar telescope. This pioneering project, led by the Astrophysics Centre of the Universidade do Porto (CAUP), will be installed at the European Southern Observatory in Chile and operational by 2025. 🌌 The PoET, part of the #FIERCE project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), promises to revolutionize the search for exo-Earths by overcoming stellar noise caused by solar activity. Entirely developed in Portugal, hardware and software, this telescope will enable unprecedented observations of the Sun and other planetary systems. 🌍 This significant advancement will support future space missions with strong Portuguese involvement, such as the European Space Agency - ESA's #PLATO and #ARIEL missions and the #ANDES spectrograph.
