Can the operating room equivalent of an airplane black box help advance surgical safety? The operating room is the most measured place in the hospital and one of the most poorly captured. From team performance to instrument handling, a range of data is not recorded. “Instead, we have post hoc recollection by a surgeon.” Enter Surgical Safety Technologies Inc. and their OR Black Box®, a platform using data to reduce risk and improve patient safety globally. The tech records everything in the operating room via panoramic cameras, microphones, and anesthesia monitors, then utilizes AI to help surgeons make sense of the data. While the patient safety movement has pushed for uniform checklists and other manual fail-safes to prevent surgical mistakes, the creator of the tech, Teodor Grantcharov, believes that “as long as the only barrier between success and failure is a human, there will be errors.” He wanted to make it challenging to make mistakes — developing the right system to create and analyze recordings could be the key. OR Black Boxes are now deployed at almost 40 institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe, from Mount Sinai to Duke to the Mayo Clinic. #surgicalsafety #patientsafety #artificialintelligence #AI #AIinHealthcare #digitalhealth https://lnkd.in/eQ4eH4i4

Will #black #boxes 🎦 in the operating room OR reduce #medical #errors? Cameras and microphones record moves and voices in the OR ▶ The #data help analyze the #workflows and decision-making process. 24% of hospital patients experience some type of harm. Black boxes can also be used to control the sequence of pre-surgery procedures, train residents, and improve healthcare professionals' skills after successful complex procedures. Next-generation black boxes in the OR—with #AI #algorithms trained on millions of surgery recordings—could even #predict adverse events and give surgeons real-life feedback. Besides, #multimodal #AI will enable the integration of data from cameras, smart devices, and electronic medical records to create best-practice safety protocols. However, healthcare professionals fear this novel technology could be used against them in medical malpractice #lawsuits. The black box systems are expensive; patients and hospital staff have concerns about their privacy even if blurred faces and distorted voices ensure privacy. The Mirage of Medical Marvels: An Ophthalmologist’s Insight into Cutting-Edge Technology Are we sacrificing patient welfare in pursuit of technological advancement? As an ophthalmologist, We have witnessed the allure of innovations like femtosecond lasers and the SMILE or SILK procedure. While these tools promise enhanced outcomes, we must pause and reflect on the true impact on patient care. The medical landscape is shifting towards a tech-centric approach, often overshadowing patient needs. Buzzwords like “laser” and “minimally invasive” dominate discussions, blurring the line between progress and patient well-being. It's crucial to maintain a balance and not overlook traditional methods in the race for innovation. In a world where marketing drives our perception of healthcare, the focus on cutting-edge solutions risks overshadowing fundamental medical practices. The pursuit of medical marvels mirrors the pitfalls of professional sports, where shortcuts compromise genuine excellence. We must prioritize solid medical practices over flashy gadgets. In my book, "An Eye for the Sky," I delve into these complexities, advocating for a harmonious blend of innovation and empathy. While advancements are essential, they should always complement, not overshadow, the core principles of patient-centered care. Exciting Update: Embracing the remote MRI realm has been a game-changer for me! 🚀 Focusing solely on perfecting scans, without the distraction of paperwork or juggling multiple tasks, has elevated my confidence and the quality of patient care. In this role, I'm not just a scanner; I'm a dedicated professional ensuring a safe MR environment for my patients. With the freedom to give my undivided attention, I've reached a point of unprecedented ease and assurance. Having spent 15 years handling challenging exams and putting out fires, this shift feels like a breath of fresh air. The results speak for themselves - almost 11k patients scanned without a single call back (well, almost, except for that unique Parkinson's case, but let's not dwell on technicalities!). My eyes stay glued to the scanner, Zone IV door, and the patient, creating a seamless and comfortable experience. What makes it even better is the incredible teamwork with Tech Aides onsite. Continuous communication throughout the day allows us to provide exceptional care. I witness firsthand how they go the extra mile – from tying elderly patients' shoes to escorting them to the front desk. This unique role, I believe, has reintroduced the element of CARE into healthcare. Proud to be a Virtual Radiologic Technologist (VRT) and contribute to this transformative journey! 🌐💙 #RemoteMRI #HealthcareTransformation #VRTProud

Black boxes in operating rooms are systems that record the course of surgeries second by second, monitor health parameters, and monitor surgeons' work via cameras and microphones. Currently used in large university hospitals, they are expected to reduce medical errors. Will they soon become a comprehensive part of every OR? https://lnkd.in/eCnvJ63E Introducing ErgoViewer: Revolutionizing Medical Procedures with Augmented Reality In the fast-paced world of medical technology, staying ahead of the curve is essential for improving patient outcomes and enhancing the efficiency of healthcare professionals. We are thrilled to introduce the ErgoViewer (EV) AR Glasses, a groundbreaking innovation set to transform the way medical practitioners perform surgical and interventional procedures, as well as diagnostic tests. This patented technology has already had a Preliminary Patent Application filed, underscoring its uniqueness and potential impact in the medical field. Purpose and Benefits The ErgoViewer AR Glasses are designed to provide medical practitioners with augmented reality (AR) capabilities during critical procedures. Whether it's a colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, arthroscopy, or laparoscopy, these glasses offer a heads-up display (HUD) that seamlessly integrates with video-equipped instruments. This innovative feature allows healthcare providers to simply glance upward to obtain crucial visual information, without the need to divert their attention or strain their necks by looking at distant monitors. Key Features Wireless Communication: The ErgoViewer glasses are equipped with a control unit that establishes wireless communication with video sources. Enhanced Ergonomics: By eliminating the need to repeatedly look away from the procedure to view external monitors, the ErgoViewer glasses reduce neck strain and enhance the ergonomics of performing medical procedures. Portable Control Unit: The glasses connect to a portable control unit via a USB-C cable. This unit houses an internal battery and a wireless receiver, which connects to a wireless transmitter attached to the video source using an HDMI connector. The ErgoViewer AR Glasses address these challenges by bringing the video feed directly into the practitioner's line of sight.
