Can the operating room equivalent of an airplane black box help advance surgical safety? The operating room is the most measured place in the hospital and one of the most poorly captured. From team performance to instrument handling, a range of data is not recorded. “Instead, we have post hoc recollection by a surgeon.” Enter Surgical Safety Technologies Inc. and their OR Black Box®, a platform using data to reduce risk and improve patient safety globally. The tech records everything in the operating room via panoramic cameras, microphones, and anesthesia monitors, then utilizes AI to help surgeons make sense of the data. While the patient safety movement has pushed for uniform checklists and other manual fail-safes to prevent surgical mistakes, the creator of the tech, Teodor Grantcharov, believes that “as long as the only barrier between success and failure is a human, there will be errors.” He wanted to make it challenging to make mistakes — developing the right system to create and analyze recordings could be the key. OR Black Boxes are now deployed at almost 40 institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe, from Mount Sinai to Duke to the Mayo Clinic. #surgicalsafety #patientsafety #artificialintelligence #AI #AIinHealthcare #digitalhealth https://lnkd.in/eQ4eH4i4
