During the roundtable I lead at GDC 2024 , a couple people brought up examples of antisemitism that occurred AT the conference Monday and Tuesday. There were more examples of things people simply encountered while being Jewish at work. If you're confused and want to learn more, we're also hosting a webinar today at 1 PM PST with some experts on antisemitism: https://lnkd.in/g9yQiXTK

There is a petition to require video game publishers to keep games playable, even after they stop supporting it. Today many games are rendered worthless when publishers stop the servers. If you are into gaming, and live in the EU, go and sign this petition! In a short while it already collected 20& of the necessary signatures. #EU #Europe #Game #Games #Gaming

Got something important to share about the gaming world! 🎮 There's a petition going around in the EU that's catching my eye. It's all about making sure our favorite games don't just... disappear. You know how sometimes publishers decide to drop support for a game? Well, this petition wants to make it a law that they have to leave the games in a playable state. No more "Sorry, servers are shut down forever" nonsense! #Gaming #LeaveGamesPlayable #GamingIndustry #DigitalRights #ConsumerProtection #EULegislation #TechPolicy

An incredible documentary on one of the best video games ever made. I love their social commentary as well, both that they put in the game and in this documentary. https://lnkd.in/eQ6cpvsP #thelastofus #videogames #socialissues

With the spread of always-connected games, it is unfortunately common that some experiences are rendered unplayable after a big publisher decides to close the main server. The biggest recent example was The Crew, which had over 12 million players, but was shut down by its publisher Ubisoft. The game allowed people to drive & race across the US, but now that is gone forever without any ability to experience it again. The Stop Killing Games initiative aims to give players the ability to rebuild these experiences. There's a lot of legal nuances to this, but in the end the petition is aimed at establishing laws that a game purchased at some point should have the ability to stay playable after the publisher closes its servers, rendering it otherwise unplayable. Right now people who have purchased The Crew, for example, can't use the product they paid for, even though it's fully digital. In case you have ever played a game that is now unplayable due to server issues, signing this petition could stop similar things from happening in the future. This petition does not take away any IP rights owned by the publishers, it does not force publishers to support the game forever, it does not force game publishers to give away internal code. The main goal of this petition is to allow a non-profit entity to take over server hosting after the publisher decides to stop running theirs. This would allow fans of games to keep them alive for future generations in a legal & controlled way.
