Where Are EdTech Products Still Failing Students? Let's Discuss UX Solutions Educational technology adoption continues accelerating globally. But too often, poor UX causes confusion, frustration and lack of engagement amongst learners. As EdTech UX strategist, I want to spotlight where many tools are still falling short and how human-centered design can get us back on track to drive better outcomes. That's why I'm hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) right here on LinkedIn around UX problems and opportunities in EdTech. Got thoughts on any of these issues learners frequently face? - Overwhelmed by too many features and confusing workflows - Losing motivation without gaming elements and social connectivity - Forgetting concepts quickly due to minimal knowledge reinforcement My goal is to uncover UX weak spots and workshop solutions so we can collectively level up the next generation of EdTech products. So please, ask away below! What UX issues are you spotting that hinder modern digital education experiences? And what ideas might address them? . . . . . . . . P.S. Let's continue this discussion! I welcome any questions in the comments for a 60-min live Q&A on elevating EdTech UX. . . . . . . . . #EdTechUX #LearnerExperience #InstructionalDesign #eLearning #UserExperience

Three reasons why investing more in UX research is warranted for EdTech:
If you're building an EdTech product, UX research is NOT optional 🚫 For most products, great UX is important for conversion and engagement. But for EdTech, poor UX is an absolute dealbreaker that will completely undermine your product's ability to facilitate learning. Here are 3 reasons why UX research deserves extra investment for EdTech: 🧠 Learning is cognitively demanding - EdTech UX must reduce mental friction to keep students focused. Research reveals stumbling blocks. 📡 One size doesn't fit all - Students have diverse learning needs, motivation, environments, and more. Research makes sure you take these factors into account when developing your product. 👩🏫 Teaching is complex - Educators utilize various instructional methods depending on the subject and student needs. Research captures this complexity. For other products, you can sometimes get away with optimizing UX after launch. But EdTech demands a learner-centered design from the start, which intensive upfront UX research provides. How do you make sure you collect data for your learning products? #UXResearch #learning #EdTech

Usability Testing for EdTech Products Is Unique Usability testing, properly done, is a bit more complex with EdTech products compared to regular products. Why? 1. What your users need and what your users say they want can, at times, be contradictory in learning contexts. 2. You have to separate poor UX from poor learning principles. You can have great UX but poor learning principles applied, great learning principles applied but poor UX (equally bad), or both poor UX and poor learning. 3. There are multiple user bases at times that meet at multiple touchpoints in their journey. Parents and students, teachers and students, parents and teachers, parents, teachers, and students, etc. ... among other reasons. Complex, unique problems require complex, unique usability testing protocols. Here are some techniques I commonly employ: 1. Classroom observation testing: Watch students and teachers use your product in their actual learning environments to spot issues. 2. Think-aloud protocols: Have users narrate their thoughts while using your tool to uncover both usability and learning friction points. 3. A/B testing for learning interactions: Create variations of key learning interactions and measure which yields better learning uptake. These specialized usability tests account for the unique challenges of building engaging, effective EdTech products that truly enhance learning. Whatever you do though, don't forget to do usability testing. I've seen firsthand how this level of usability focus can transform an EdTech tool from an underperforming dud into a platform beloved by students and educators. I've seen firsthand how not accounting for both learning and UX tanks conversions. What do you think? #EdTech #usability #UX

What's the best investment you can make in edTech product development to save on design and engineering costs? 💰 For the Backpack team, that's always an easy answer—user research and other UX discovery sessions! A discovery phase typically costs 10% or less of your total spend for design and engineering—but it saves you plenty of missteps and extra work along the way. You might have incredible learning content, beautiful design work, and breathtaking technology, but if you’re guessing about what your users actually need—your edTech product is at risk. Discovery sessions will help you: -mitigate these risks with real user data and insights 👩🏫 -create a learning tool that performs better in the marketplace 💳 -and streamline your entire design and development process 🤝 Learn more about the ROI of discovery in edTech product development at the link below! #edtech #uxdesign #userresearch
