Working to protect the high seas is on my bucket list. 🫶 Since my graduate studies the UNCLOS pulled me, and as Minna Epps explains, the Treaty of the High Seas fills those gaps UNCLOS has. Establishing MPAs, focusing on protecting biodiversity in international waters and integrating traditional indigenous knowledge and cultural values is the way forward. On World Ocean Day, may this goal to protect it in its entirety come closer to reality. 🌎🌍🌏🌊

Looking forward to this theme on MPA‘s beyond national borders being discussed in South Africa in conferences and the likes. While I am a big advocate for Sustainable resource use, I have my own biased standing on the matter which is largely based on a Developmental school of thought. Could this treaty be a relief to those who were against sea bed mining? The inclusion of UNCLOS into legal instruments is about to be a contentious issue in SA Ocean Governance sphere with the plans proposed by Maritime Authorities including the Ports. Next few years are about to get interesting. First place to start is creating policies and resolve conflicting issues related to our Exclusive Economic Zones. As things stand we are heading into interesting times in our Maritime industry.
