When times get tough, I do more stuff that sweetens my cup. It's easy to get sucked into the latest bad news cycle or doom scroll into oblivion. It's a lot harder to break unhelpful patterns and focus on what we can actually control - which is a pretty short list when you stop and think about it. We can't control: The weather. The economy. Other people - *especially* politicians. When whatever we're waiting for will happen. The latest greatest changes the C-suite will make. For the most part, we can control: What we consume. How we spend our downtime. Who we keep in our inner circles. How we handle what's thrown at us. What we do with each moment we're given. When I feel myself starting to spin, I know I need to: Write. Stretch. Text a friend. Read a book. Go for a walk. Pet (all the) dogs. Make a cup of coffee. Drink a glass of water. Blast my pump-up anthem. Pick up heavy things and put them back down. If you're feeling a little spinny right now, make the next thing you do something good for yourself - you won't regret it. If you lead a team, try asking them: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤? Then check back in and see if it happened, and how it went. We've started doing this at our weekly team kickoff on Mondays, and I'm hopeful that it's setting our week off in a better direction. Having a happy, healthy team is more important than any deadline or task list. Plus, happy, healthy people do the best work - so it's a win/win. So, what's something good you're going to do for yourself this week? Drop it in the comments and I'll follow up to see how it went!
I love this sentiment - do more stuff that sweetens your cup!
You read my mind - lift heavy and pet dogs :)
Texting a friend AKA texting your second favorite cousin (me 🥹🥰)
I took a caligraphy workshop with a friend this week. It was so fun and all consuming of my focus that 3 hours of mark making just flew by!
I'm a people, process, project, and program leader designing solutions that really stick.
2moVictoria Lincoln thanks for the nudge to get back at it! Doodling is also something that sweetens my cup.
