Cheese is on the blockchain. That's right. You heard me correctly. Cheese. Cheese is on chain. Parmesan cheese, to be a little more specific. Hello everybody, my name is Ashley. Welcome to my new series, Who's On Chain? Alright, so cheese is on chain, you guys, not just any cheese Parmesan. And not just any Parmesan. The real legit Parmesan. Parmigiano Reggiano. Why is this happening? You may be asking yourself legitimate Parmesan cheese Parmigiano Reggiano is very frequently counterfeited. In fact, it's something like $2 billion a year of counterfeit Parmesan cheese is sold. This apparently compared to a legitimate authentic Parmesan that's sold, which is about $3 billion a year. You can understand why if you're a producer of this highly regarded, highly least sought after, expensive good, you want to protect it. I get it. You might like that dusty, crappy stuff in the Kraft bottle. Im not a snob. You can't tell, but I am Italian. So I like the real stuff. Over the last year there's been a pilot project of about 100,000 wheels of Parmesan cheese with imbedded edible microchips that are tracking not only the cheese, but also can track back to the original milk, where it came from, and then of course where it ends up. The microchip, its not intended to be ingested, but it safely can be, apparently. It adds a lot of transparency for the product. It's at a very low cost. It also allows people like retailers to know what they're getting, they can scan it and know it's the real thing. Understand the sources. This new technology that's being embedded, the microchip is called a p-Chip and apparently it's being looked at for livestock, crops, medication, even automotive parts, making sure things are authentic, traceable and what you expect them to be. Alright, enjoy your cheese, whichever you prefer, and come back soon for the next edition of Who's On Chain?
The innovation in this space lol ... this is a great use case for the use of the Blockchain! Being able to track items in the supply chain and its authenticity the blockchain has got you covered :)
