This week, I had the privilege of presenting on "Strategies to Improve Quality and Safety in Pharmacy Practice" at PANTHERx Rare Pharmacy as a part of my rotation as well as their accreditation process. I am immensely grateful to my preceptor, Joseph Millward for entrusting me with this opportunity! Quality and safety are paramount in pharmacy practice, where professionals from diverse backgrounds work together to deliver exceptional patient care. But why is quality and safety crucial within the field of pharmacy? Firstly, they create positive outcomes by building trust, preventing errors, and ensuring compliance with regulations. They also drive cost efficiency by reducing errors and waste while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. To enhance quality and safety, we can implement several strategies. For instance, assessing health literacy levels is vital to prevent misunderstandings and improve adherence. Minimizing benchmarking and encouraging self-comparison can lead to more actionable reports and a safer environment. Minimizing distractions, ensuring competency during onboarding, and implementing timely medication reconciliations are also key strategies. By focusing on these strategies, we can create an environment that minimizes errors, maximizes patient education, and optimizes medication management processes. I'm eager to hear your insights and experiences in this area! #PharmacyPractice #PatientSafety #QualityCare #ContinuousImprovement #Healthcare #PharmacyStudent #PANTHERxRarePharmacy #LECOMSchoolOfPharmacy

Exciting Update! As I near the completion of my doctoral degree, I'm thrilled to share that I'll be presenting my research findings in the coming weeks. My focus? Exploring the impact of certified and registered pharmacy technicians on pharmacy outcomes and scope of practice within health systems. My study centers on the PICO question: "In health systems with certified and registered pharmacy technicians, how does their presence improve pharmacy outcomes and scope of practice compared to their absence?" My objective is clear: to foster collaboration and understanding between pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. I aim to cultivate an environment where pharmacists recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of technicians. After all, every member of the healthcare team plays a crucial role in patient care. 💊 Pharmacy technicians often serve as unsung heroes, with their keen eye for error detection potentially saving lives. It's time we acknowledge and elevate their significance within the healthcare system. I'm eager to share my insights and spark meaningful discussions around this vital topic. Stay tuned for updates! #PharmacyResearch #HealthcareCollaboration #PharmacyTechnicians #PatientCare #TranslatingEvidenceIntoPratice #PTCB #PTEC

The Misfit PharmD | Ghost writer 👻 | Championing PharmDs to work outside the traditional pharmacy box
Pharmacists' ability to follow rules is slowly strangling the profession. Here are 5 reasons why I believe this: 1. It keeps us from questioning the status quo....locked in traditional roles 2. We are deathly afraid of speaking up or doing something 'wrong'--therefore we wait and wait.... and wait.. and wait.. and wait for change to be granted in our favor 3. We don't have to hurt any other profession's feelings or make them feel uncomfortable 4. It has been drilled into our brains that we have to be perfect and we cannot make mistakes. We don't question authority or bad things will happen. Example: too worried to expand the role of what we do in our state because we fear the wrath of the board of pharmacy will come down upon our heads, strip us of our RPh license in an instant, and leave us broke & penniless with no way to provide for our families 5. We honestly don't know how to stand up for ourselves. We've always been the go-between/pushover profession trying to keep both prescribers and patients happy. If we don't stand up for ourselves nobody else will. I dare you to get outside your RPh-brain comfort zone and stand up for yourself and our profession today. I know, I know, that's part of why you *became* a pharmacist: so you could meekly live life following marching orders without ever really having to take a stand. It's not in our nature to question authority. It can make us want to hide under a mountain to think that the board of pharmacy may have their eye on us. Our skin may crawl just thinking about having a prescriber question our insight. But we can help patients in a meaningful way and if we don't expand our role then ultimately it'll be them that suffer. You know how you can expand the role of the pharmacist in your neck of the woods. I dare you to do it!
