Google adopted "XR" as the overall umbrella term for immersive tech, pretty much cementing at this point it over "mixed reality" as the umbrella term. Here's a look at the terminology framework most of the industry is using today. P.S. this thread is not an invitation to argue about definitions; there never has been a "correct" definition for any of this. People coalesce around whatever definitions are useful for communication.
Resharing this post, which has a nice graphic to illustrate that "Smart Glasses" (e.g., Meta Ray-Bans)... are not in the same category as Spatial Computing HMD devices such as the Apple Vision Pro for "3D Immersive Experiences"... i.e., simply put, they are a HUD (Head's Up Display) device for a "2D Experience"... a.k.a. Assisted Reality.
Thus, when you hear people saying they want Augmented Reality experiences to be in the "Form Factor" of glasses... they will never be close to Professional HMD's... WHY? 1) because they simply 'do not have the required physical space' to mount the required tracking cameras needed for a quality Augmented Reality experience (Note: Vision Pro has 14 cameras mapping your environment). 2) Lenses 'do not have the required physical space' for quality optics to provide high resolution. 3) The frames 'do not have the required physical space' to mount the electronics (and dedicated graphic processor chips) to drive the displays.
