I heard Dame Sarah Storey’s incredible story of winning gold on Radio 4 this morning. Clare Balding, who was described as "leading the coverage of the Paralympics," quickly corrected that description—she shone a light on her team, emphasising the talent we don’t often see. For example, those signing to her co-host and how differing talents in the broader team contribute to new thinking. It was a reminder that even the best performances rely on the collective effort of others. True professionals recognise that their finest work happens with the support of a great team.
As I stand at the Mall Galleries today, exhibiting my photography, I’m reminded that this moment wasn’t achieved alone. From the framers to the organisers, the gallery staff, and my mentors and supporters, everyone behind the scenes has played an essential part in bringing this exhibition to life.
In business, as in photography or professional speaking, success is rarely the result of a single person’s effort. By acknowledging the contributions of those around us, we inspire loyalty and elevate the quality of the work. When everyone feels valued, they bring their best performance, and that energy drives success for all.
It's crucial to understand the consequences of overlooking the contributions of our team members. Failing to acknowledge their efforts leads to disengagement, missed opportunities, and a decline in trust. A thriving business, like a masterpiece, requires every detail, every effort, and every team member working in harmony. Each is a vital part of this puzzle; without their contributions, even the brightest stars struggle to shine.
Masters shine the light on those who make what they do possible. Like Clare Balding, they don't allow the limelight to pool only around them; they turn every spotlight into a floodlight.
