“We need to transform outdated systems by including refugees in decision-making and seeing refugees as agents of change in every step of our solutions process.” Interesting Read on the 3 key interrelated and mutually reinforcing approaches to deliver on the 2023 Global Refugee Forum pledges: 1. Accountability: We must track and measure the impact of every initiative to ensure meaningful outcomes for refugees. 2. Innovation: Leveraging creative, practical solutions to improve refugees' lives, from local businesses to tech initiatives. 3. Integration: Policies and programs must facilitate refugees' smooth transition into host societies, benefiting everyone involved. The Asia Pacific Summit of Refugees (APSOR) 2024, organised by the Asia Pacific Network of Refugees (APNOR), stands as a beacon of hope and collaboration in the quest for sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by refugees and refugee-led organisations in the Asia Pacific Region. As we gather for this significant event, we aim to amplify the voices of refugees, foster dialogue, and forge partnerships that transcend borders, promoting inclusivity and resilience. The summit’s regular convening ensures that stakeholders have regular opportunities to assess progress, exchange best practices, and chart a collective path forward in advancing the rights, well-being, and integration of refugees. As we gather for this collaborative event, we reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive, compassionate, and resilient future for all individuals displaced by conflict and persecution in the Asia Pacific Region. APSOR will be connected to 13 other national hubs (Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Thai Burma Border and Bangkok, Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, and India) across Asia to increase engagement and inclusivity for refugees who are unable to travel. Sharing an interesting interview that I was part of during a mission of IOM - UN Migration Caribbean Coordination Office to #antiguaandbarbuda. Patrice Quesada and I were guests of the show on ABS TV as part of the commemoration of International #MigrantsDay 2023. Migration is a complex but very #human phenomenon. People have moved for various reasons since the beginning of time and will continue to move until, I suppose, the end of time! The question to be considered is how the #power of migration can be harnessed for the sake of development, not only of the "new" place of residence (destination country), or the "home" country (country of origin) for that matter. How can migration be a force for reducing inequalities between and within countries - i.e. - for the benefit of the #migrant, their new home, and the place they left? For example, #remittances contribute more than #foreigninvestment in many developing countries whose citizens have left for the proverbial #greenerpastures. Remittances have proven, in the islands of the Caribbean, to be particularly important for people who are highly #vulnerable, supporting national #recovery and #resilience building during times of crisis, for example, after hurricanes and other environmental #disasters, and also during challenging times like the #COVID-19 pandemic. #Policies at the national and regional level can have a big impact on the way in which migration occurs (regular pathways? smuggling? trafficking?), the skills that are attracted, or exported, and the ability of migrants to integrate and #contribute fully to national development. In Antigua and Barbuda for instance, we found that their #inclusive and pro- #education policies have a great impact in maximizing the contribution of migrants to Antigua's #economy and #society. On the other hand, #individual attitudes of #stigmatization and #discrimination can hamper migrants' abilities to succeed and excel individually and collectively. This has a domino effect on their contribution to national income, including the #taxes that they would pay and their #consumption in the economy, but also their ability to take care of, for instance, the cost of their own health care, and the health of people who depend on them (elderly, disabled, children, etc). Listen to the interview and please feel free to share your views on how we can #ActToday to harness the power of migration in the Caribbean! I am really interested to hear...

Not all cultures are compatible, and the West should prioritize cultural compatibility rather than yielding to United Nations pressure to accept any and all (refugees) migrants. Many countries in the Middle East carefully select migrants based on cultural fit, and the same consideration should apply globally. The UN must focus on resettling refugees in regions where cultural integration is viable, or it risks creating further instability and tension. By ignoring these realities, the UN undermines its own mission to promote peace and harmony, ultimately making the world less livable. #unitednations #culture #peacefulliving

Great step forward. Top of my head, One recommendation that will have profound impact is for the region governments to deal with the border corruption that has eaten so deep especially across West Africa. Border Corruption across check points is enabling trafficking of persons. Also, we don't need that many check points on road routes
Nearly 90 participants from across West and Central Africa came together in Dakar with a shared mission: to tackle the region’s biggest migration challenges. They focused on improving migration channels, safeguarding migrant rights and strengthening ties within ECOWAS and ECCAS. With the GCM Review in Addis Ababa just around the corner in October, we're excited to see how these efforts will shape the future of migration in our regions.

"Nothing about us without us." We are pleased to reflect on the recent Asia Pacific Summit of Refugees (APSOR) 2024, organized by the Asia Pacific Network of Refugees. This remarkable event, orchestrated entirely by refugees, showcased the power of lived experience in shaping initiatives that directly impact their lives. At Justice Centre Hong Kong, we were honoured to support Hong Kong's participation. Over three days, refugees gathered in our office, connecting with peers across the region to discuss vital issues. This summit epitomized the belief that those with lived experience should lead the conversations about their futures. When refugees lead initiatives, the outcomes are more relevant, impactful, and sustainable. NGOs play a crucial role in fostering this empowerment by creating spaces for refugee voices, rather than occupying those spaces themselves. It's about partnership, not paternalism. We witnessed firsthand the dedication of all participants, and their discussions have laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and compassionate society. Their insights are invaluable, and their leadership is essential. As we reflect we invite you to join the conversation; how can NGOs better support and amplify refugee-led initiatives to ensure their voices are heard and respected? #APSOR2024 #RefugeeLeadership #LivedExperience #JusticeCentreHK #RefugeeVoices #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs #AsiaPacificNetworkOfRefugees #Collaboration #Refugees
