It's been a hectic week at #PAS2024 and #Ecosperity. We took some time to 'wine🍷' down with our members, together with partners and friends from Asia Community Foundation, Accelerate Indian Philanthropy (AIP), and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and our host Anthonia HUI to discuss the Frontiers of Global Development. Some great highlights: ❓ We asked ourselves: What is the role of #philanthropy in building #TheFutureWeChoose? This will be continuing question we aim to tackle. Several zingers from our speakers Ashish Dhawan, Mary Ann Tsao, Mike Boots, Laurence Lien and Robert Rosen: ➡ A lot of #philanthropy starts with getting pissed off. Do we see the injustice around us? Is anyone doing anything? ➡ There is no path to #social and #environmental stability without #Asia ➡ There is a lot of attention on Asia; now is the time to turn this buzz into #action ➡ This is year of the "Rise of the Rest!" Where do we go from here? ➡ Roles remain for #GlobalFunders: lots of #publicgoods are still not funded by local philanthropy, but are necessary and foundational for local social #impact ecosystems to grow. It's time to think about what we need to do now to build #TheFutureWeChoose--we invite you in thinking about your own role as we move through complex challenges and changes happening across the world.

Chanced on this throwback to lively dialog (Putting my hands up in a rendition of Thriller - I know you know) on cause projects, beneficiary impact, and the funding framework for NGOs and impact startups. A privilege to have worked on a range of efforts, some falling under the United Nations SDGs, to benefit underserved parts of our communities along with supporting and springboarding the organizations that work tirelessly within them. Some: ✅Dementia & Alzheimer’s, aged care, the constellation of universal community & mental health challenges ✅Sustainability, environmental stewardship, climate change, oceans conservation ✅Poverty alleviation, food scarcity, other humanitarian work ✅Financial literacy & inclusion, bankability, critical upskilling for basic family & household wellness ✅Access to justice, courts systems, governance, closing the legal gap, addressing systemic imbalance ✅Diversity and inclusion - gender, ability, culture, class, LGBTQIA+, immigration & expatriation ✅Youth engagement, expression, developing technical & non-technical skills, career development If I recall, this was a talk on fundability and impact in nonprofit/charitable ecosystems that I did in Gent, Belgium, at one of the European Mensa Annual Gatherings. A great couple of hours digging deep into the intricacies from DEI, universal healthcare, femhealth, financial education, to disparities in senior living, the ways we become a more circular economy, renewables, straight through to challenges in startup executive leadership and creating meaningful development opportunities for management teams. At the recent members retreat of the Global Philanthropists Circle in beautiful Comporta, Portugal, we came together with participants from 15 countries to reflect on our theme, “Becoming Better Ancestors.” The gathering was not just about philanthropy; it was an opportunity to step back, connect with nature, and consider the legacy we hope to create. One powerful takeaway was seeing members embrace intergenerational conversations to strengthen their impact. From next-generation insights to a moving fireside chat between a mother and daughter honouring a grandfather’s legacy, these dialogues highlighted the importance of bridging past, present, and future for lasting change. Through the Synergos Bridging Leadership approach, rooted in inner work, collaboration, and systems thinking, we’re not only exploring what’s possible but actively working to shift systems toward a future grounded in trust, love, and shared purpose. As a community, we’re answering the call to think boldly and act courageously. Together, we can foster transformational change and become the ancestors future generations will be proud of. #Philanthropy #Leadership #BetterAncestors

Is Asian philanthropy different from Western philanthropy? What are the roles of government and corporations, versus wealthy individuals and families? This is one of the questions Carbonless Asia' Head of Research Alexandra Tracy asked Carol Tan from Asia Philanthropy Circle in a deep, candid interview. Here's what Carol shared: "Asian philanthropy is different only insofar as the context is different – one’s not better than the other, only that the environments may require different roles of philanthropy. Some of the defining characteristics of philanthropy in Asia include a tendency toward superordinate goals, preference for local causes due to basic needs that are still unmet in our populous region, and often ambivalent relationships with government. A lot of giving also happens on the corporate front, as family business and philanthropy are less distinct from each other than in the western world. That said, there are lots of similarities, the drive for impact to make a difference on people’s lives and on systemic issues can unify both sides." At NDN Collective we take the measurement of our impact seriously. We are intentional about the impact that we have and the way the infrastructure we build impacts so many communities. As we close out 2024 we want to reflect on the shift our organization went through during 2023. In 2023 we moved from showing proof of concept to really doubling down on our theory of change and understanding the impact we are having. One of the reasons we’ve been able to reach so many communities is because our theory of change is interwoven into our lived experience as frontline practitioners. Our work has touched so many parts of Turtle Island that we now can't imagine a world without NDN Collective. We’re currently working to ensure that the infrastructure we have built is here for decades to come so we can continue to transform Indian Country. One way we can do that is by showing you all the deep impact that we continue to have Join us in taking a look back into our organization and learn about how our work strengthened in 2023 . In 2023, we started to see community-based organizations that received initial funding from us stabilize. Traditional philanthropy operates within short windows, but through our multi-year grantmaking, we’ve been able to watch Indigenous-led and community-based organizations thrive thanks to consistent support. Our “Changing the Landscape We Build In” 2023 impact report offers a behind-the-scenes look at who we are liberating resources from, and how we approach the work of Indigenous wealth building that is being done on a scale never seen before. 🪶 Want more information on what NDN Collective has accomplished in 2023?
