Thank you Asia Society / Asia Society India Centre for the spotlight and your long standing support of IIX’s work. It was a treat to discuss my leadership style in this feature, especially in the midst of Bangladesh’s revolution. Defiant Optimism - the stubborn belief that systems that enrich the few can be transformed for the good of the many - is needed now more than ever. The student protests showed us exactly what Defiant Optimism can achieve. I’m sure this is not a surprise to you, but I get a lot of “questions” on my leadership style: Why do I choose to be defiant? Why does it seem as if I just like to rebel? What drives me to keep fighting even when I hear so many “nos” and “don’ts”? Here is my response: when we live in a system that is built on oppression and designed to maintain inequality, why wouldn’t you rebel against that? Why would you respond to that system with compliance? Or only silently disagree?
