I've worn many fantastic titles in my life, including mom. But nothing quite compares to being Mother-of-the-Bride. As Andre Goode and I embark on our three-day wedding weekend for Kaylyn Goode, I'm reflecting on how this role tested my abilities as a mom and a leader and reinforced principles that are importand in business and in life:
✨️Purpose is key. The wedding industry may have commercialized ceremonies, but staying true to the sacredness of the event was vital for us. We made that clear to each of our 20 vendors so they brought the right energy and focus to create the celebration of love we desired. Creating alignment up front and staying aligned on purpose throughout the process increases the likelihood of success.
✨️ Role clarity matters. In the early days of planning, it felt like my daughter and I weren't on the same team. I had to do more empowering and cheering on, rather than directing. Transitioning from driver to supporter of the bride-to-be required honest conversations, a few tears and empathy from both sides. When we established role clarity, trust followed and we became an unstoppable force. Isn't that how we want all our teams to operate?
✨️Pick your battles. Balancing 252 wedding tasks, multiple perspectives, and cultural nuances, I learned to stand firm for what mattered most to the bride (and sometimes me), while also knowing when to step back. Sometimes, all of us needed to just let the couple have their way. Bottom line, every battle doesn't need to be fought.
✨️Ask for help. In addition to paying professionals to help with planning, I enlisted co-workers, family members and friends to help me balance personal and professional obligations. Trying to do it all would be draining. No #superwoman syndrome here.
✨️Be present and focused. I am out of office and not trying to squeeze in work over the next few days. This is our daughter's time and our family time and it requires all in focus, an example we should set for the people who work for us. This is my cue to end this post and let the celebrations begin. 🥂
