Talking with Nicola Fox (Ph.D.) today at NASA HQ today prompts me to clarify my post below least anyone misinterpret my intent. 1. 𝙄 𝙇𝙊𝙑𝙀 𝙅𝙒𝙎𝙏, its images, and its science. 2. 𝙅𝙒𝙎𝙏 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 and worse by being so much more expensive (10x) than originally budgeted, 𝙞𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 missions over several years, that the public never saw (what is seen and what is not seen). 3. In comparing what $10B could do to things like sending 100k students to college or funding Artemis I was not suggesting that science funds be diverted - everyone knows I think 𝙉𝘼𝙎𝘼 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙈𝙊𝙍𝙀 $ - but 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 4. As we evaluate other potential budget whales there can be no excuse for being 10x off. Congress is more likely to allocate future funds when past missions are successful in science and finance. 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩. 5. 𝙉𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙅𝙒𝙎𝙏 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙎𝙈𝘿 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙤𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥. The problems were baked in years ago when someone accepted an unrealistically low budget for an extremely complex design. Thomas H. Zurbuchen did what had to be done with the JWST wedge he had inherited and Fox saw it through. They made sure the huge investment paid off and it worked!

#HH211, #JWST helps us understand the early stages of star and planet formation, providing context for how our own solar system may have formed. While this single image doesn't show the entire 4.5-billion-year journey from star formation to the evolution of self-aware life, it offers a glimpse into the very beginning of that process. While the JWST image of Herbig-Haro 211 (HH 211) doesn't directly show how our Sun formed, it does provide valuable insights into star formation processes that are likely similar to our Sun's early stages. HH 211 shows a very young star in its early stages of formation, similar to how our Sun would have looked about 4.6 billion years ago. The image reveals powerful jets and outflows, which are typical features of young stellar objects. Young stars like HH 211 are typically surrounded by a disk of gas and dust, called a protoplanetary disk. In our solar system, this disk eventually coalesced to form the planets, including Earth. HH 211 is only tens of thousands of years old, while our Sun and solar system took about 50 million years to form fully. Self-aware life on Earth evolved much later, over billions of years of evolution.

In the middle of emission nebula NGC 6164 is an unusually massive star. The central star has been compared to an oyster's pearl and an egg protected by the mythical sky dragons of Ara. The star, visible in the center of the featured image and catalogued as HD 148937, is so hot that the ultraviolet light it emits heats up gas that surrounds it. That gas was likely thrown off from the star previously, possibly the result of a gravitational interaction with a looping stellar companion. Expelled material might have been channeled by the magnetic field of the massive star, in all creating the symmetric shape of the bipolar nebula. One of the Classiest and most magnificent views of our universe Mountain-like structures of gas and dust jut upwards into space. Mostly brown with glowing orange regions, these structures narrow as they grow taller, with jets of gas seen at their tips. The nebulous background of space glows in shades of blue and violet, with a few pink stars scattered throughout. For starters, it's three light-years tall. And as part of one of our galaxy's largest star-forming regions, it's also mostly made of hydrogen! Thankfully, none of the mountain bikers competing in the #Olympics have to deal with that! This view of the "Mystic Mountain" was Hubble's 20th anniversary image! Still, this newly released image from the NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) on the James Webb Space Telescope offers a detailed look at the distant world. The tilted outer planet rotates on its axis once in about 17 hours. Its north pole is presently pointed near our line of sight, offering direct views of its northern hemisphere and a faint but extensive system of rings. Of the giant planet's 27 known moons, 14 are annotated in the image. The brighter ones show hints of Webb's characteristic diffraction spikes.
