Philanthropists are stepping up to address the long-standing funding inequities faced by Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Spelman College recently received a monumental $100 million donation from Ronda Stryker and William Johnston, marking the largest single donation to an #HBCU. This follows a $100 million gift to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) from the Lilly Endowment Inc. The influx of donations, highlights the critical need for endowment funding to empower HBCUs to fulfill their missions. These unrestricted funds provide flexibility for scholarships, facility improvements, research, and academic expansion. However, despite this progress, HBCUs continue to grapple with significant funding disparities compared to predominantly white institutions. The gap in endowment sizes remains staggering, hindering HBCUs' ability to invest in their future.
