Mizuho Bank was named Best Asian International Transaction Bank for its One APAC Region strategy that drove greater synergies on the back of new opportunities, better network strength, collaboration and integrated solutions.     The bank merged its Transaction Banking Asia Oceania and East Asia Regions to create one Asia Pacific Region to drive transaction banking synergies across its 14 markets.      In one of its key markets, Mizuho collaborated with a fintech to launch an API-enabled virtual account solution to assist customers with real-time notifications, and paired the solution with a payment gateway to drive seamless receipt of reconciled funds. It went live with digitalised issuance of banker’s guarantees. Given these initiatives, the bank’s transaction banking revenue increased by more than 40%.      The Transaction Finance Awards 2024 recognises achievements in key business and operational areas of the financial services industry. They programme highlights the winning banks’ annual achievements, competition for market share, and product and operational excellence. This year, 2024, marks HSBC’s 40 years of banking service in Taiwan. Whilst celebrating this special moment with all of our Taiwan colleagues, I’m very happy to have taken an interview with Commercial Times’ journalist Ms. Lena Huang share what we’ve achieved for these years and our vision to Taiwan in the future. Taiwan is an important market for HSBC ASP, especially for its leading development in the areas of AI, semiconductor and ICT, as well as its growing potential to the wealth business. For this year, we’ve been proudly to become the 1st foreign bank subsidiary obtaining the approval of Wealth 2.0 business. In addition, HSBC is currently the only international bank in Taiwan with global presence and with businesses to serve customers from retail, wealth, private banking and wholesale propositions. It’s even more important that our four values – we value difference; we succeed together; we take responsibility; we get it done – build up our culture and guide us from strategic decisions to day-to-day interactions with customers and each other. DBS Bank is expanding its private banking team in Hong Kong by over 25% this year, driven by increasing inflows from mainland China and Taiwan, according to North Asia business head Sebastian Paredes. The bank has acquired nearly 1,200 clients from mainland China this year and seen substantial flows from Taiwan over the past 12 months. DBS Bank, Singapore’s largest lender, has capitalized on the retrenchment of older international banks in Hong Kong, surpassing Credit Suisse to become the third largest private bank in Asia, excluding onshore China, with $201 billion in assets under management. The bank’s relationship managers grew by 12% to 730 in 2023, overtaking HSBC. EXCERPTS: HSBC Holdings has a $15 billion headache in China—a big stake in a local lender that it can’t easily sell and that could require a big write-down. Long after most other Western banking giants have exited similar positions, HSBC has held on to its roughly 19% position in Bank of Communications, an investment that dates back to 2004. HSBC, Europe’s largest bank by market value, has said the stake is strategically important for its ambitions to grow in Asia. But over the years, a gulf has opened up between HSBC’s valuation of the shareholding and the lower value implied by BoCom’s stock price. In August, HSBC put its internal valuation at $23.9 billion, or about $14.5 billion above the level suggested by the shares. The questions over BoCom, including whether HSBC could contemplate a sale, aren’t just about arcane accounting issues. They also reflect HSBC’s unique position as a huge Western bank that has staked much of its future on growing in mainland China and in Asia more broadly. “HSBC is desperately trying to straddle between the Chinese political system and the U.S. dollar-based political system". The bank, which has more than $3 trillion in total assets, already earns most of its income in Asia. It has a dominant presence in Hong Kong and a major footprint in mainland China, with particular ambitions in insurance and managing wealth. For years, HSBC has been paring back in North America and Europe to focus more on Asia, despite heightened geopolitical tensions between China and the West.
