Personal stories stir emotions and influence positive change, and that's why I want to share mine with you ... in the hope that my experience can help save at least one life — maybe even yours. #MelanomaPrevention is my passion, and it begins with #SunProtection and #MelanomaAwareness. I've had #Melanoma (as #SkinCancer) detected early and removed twice within the last two years (as recently as March of 2024). Even though I'm now considered "cured" of those instances, melanoma continues to stalk me from the shadows. It always will. And I am not alone. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer (i.e., the kind that can jump to other areas/organs from the skin), claiming the lives of more than 8,000 Americans a year. However, nine out of 10 cases are considered preventable, according to the Melanoma Research Foundation. Sun protection and early detection are key, as are regular skin checks for those who are at risk (i.e., pretty much anyone who has ever had a sunburn, who has a family history of melanoma, who is over a certain age, etc.). Have an existing spot on your skin that seems to be evolving? Have a spot that itches or causes pain? Have a new spot that causes you any pause at all? Please go in for a baseline skin check and a biopsy. My melanoma hasn't ever followed the typical ABCDs (i.e., asymmetry, border, color, or diameter) of skin cancer, so my doctors have tended to wave my moles/spots off as "normal." But I don't let them anymore. "When in doubt, take it out" is my new motto. As for my current protection/detection regimen, I slather myself in sunscreen, wear UV-protective clothing, hide under hoods and hats, monitor my skin every day, and see my specialist at least twice a year (sometimes more if I've had a recent skin surgery). To kick things up a notch this year, I will start AI-mole mapping with my next dermatology appointment. And due to melanoma's genetic factors, I bring my son in annually for his own skin check.
