Did you know that Bristol has been an independent County for 650 years? 'Bristol 650’ has seen a year long series of events celebrating all things Bristol to commemorate this remarkable anniversary. Coordinated by the inspiring Bristol Ideas , and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. For a long time we have been dedicated to understanding the significance of local (built and unbuilt) heritage, and how it can act as a vehicle through which local identities and community cohesion can be strengthened. Working alongside Local Learning and the Hillfield’s community, we explored how local heritage could create a community atlas - showing how Bristol has grown. The workshop built on the Hillfields Homes for Heroes project, and saw local residents come together to celebrate Bristol’s first garden suburb by recreating the gardens through model making and storytelling. Models showcased mini-allotments and birds in ponds, and the community ‘washing line’ rounded up the workshop, where residents shared their past stories and hopes for the future of their City. The collaborative activity bought people together, young and old, allowing them to share a sense of place and identify what is important to residents today. #heritagefund #collaborativedesign #communityengagement #Bristol

Here comes 9,000 trees 🌳 We're ecstatic to announce that The Friends is the proud recipient of a grant from the Julia Rausing Trust The Trust is contributing £190,000 towards the Silk Wood Community Planting Project (SWCPP) over the next two years, which will fund 9,000 trees planted in the arboretum. What's more, the grant will be used to add new physical interpretation of the woodland, delivering a series of both artist and educational workshops. Emma Griffiths, CEO, The Friends says “We are over the moon and beyond grateful to The Julia Rausing Trust for partnering with us and offering this significant award which will result in the delivery of such an important project at Westonbirt Arboretum. The SWCPP is all about inclusion and community; it would be easy to simply bring in contractors to ‘put things right,’ but instead the heart of SWCPP focusses on young people, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those with physical and neurodiverse conditions, across a broad range of ethnicities. This means that the arboretum’s beautiful newly restored woodland is designed, planted, managed, monitored and cared for, now and in the future, by Westonbirt Arboretum teams, community groups, schools and other volunteers." Rural and Indigenous communities many times have employees that wear many hats. They do not have the ability to hire extra personnel to assist with grant writing, do the additional work needed to build resilience against future disasters, or have the additional matching funds that some grants require. Philanthropy organizations can help fill this crucial gap needed for these communities be prepared for disasters.
Unfortunately, this is not a new conversation, but excited to be part of an organization working to change this paradigm! Always proud of the work Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) is doing to build vibrant, healthy, and thriving rural and Indigenous communities throughout the west. #RuralMatters

Across the country, historic buildings are falling into dereliction and in need of new purposes. Across the country, we need more homes. These two problems can help solve each other - and preserve what is unique about our cities, towns and villages, building civic pride - but such projects are complex and need experienced teams to lead. That's why we at The Architectural Heritage Fund are partnering with The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support organisations such as Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust to become heritage-regeneration leaders in their towns and cities - our Heritage Development Trust programme. You can read more 👇 about one of the latest such projects we've supported below, to save a beautiful 18th-century almshouse and give it back its purpose. #housing #heritage #regeneration
📢 Have you heard the news about iconic Keelmen's Hospital? Built in 1701 as an almshouse for the city's sick and injured keelmen (who transported coal from the shallow river to ocean-going ships), this Grade II*-listed beauty has been vacant and deteriorating for 15 years. Now, thanks to a partnership between Heritage Development Trust Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust (TWBPT) Martin Hulse and Newcastle City Council, funded by Historic England and ourselves, Keelmen's Hospital will again bring much-needed affordable homes to Newcastle. Historic buildings can help us address our housing crisis and promote pride in our cities and their diverse histories. But these complex projects require partnerships and experienced heritage-regeneration leaders, such as TWBPT. At The Architectural Heritage Fund, we believe every town and region needs such a leader, and that's why we are supporting 19 Heritage Development Trusts across the UK. Thanks to Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Historic England, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting the grants towards this project and our Heritage Development Trust programme. https://lnkd.in/etAC632Y #heritage #regeneration #housing
