More than the loss of one's sight or hearing alone, living with deafblindness can profoundly impact a person's life and their access to information. It's a unique and often misunderstood condition that affects each person differently and can occur at different stages of life depending on the cause. ❓ DID YOU KNOW? That deafblindness has specific provision within the Care Act 2014 enshrining local authority's legal responsibility to ensure that appropriate services, care and support are provided to those living with deafblindness in their area? An estimated 450,000 people in the UK are living with deafblindness, and this figure is expected to rise to around 610,000 by 2035. Campaigns like #DeafblindAwarenessWeek and organisations like Deafblind UK aim to shine a spotlight on the needs and aspirations of the deafblind community, advocating for broader public understanding of the condition and how we can all seek to be more #deafblindfriendly. BASW England Children and Families Seminar: Working with Deaf Families This is a topic I care deeply about. In my experience, there is a dearth of knowledge among child and family social workers about Deaf culture. As a profession, we need to do more to raise awareness of Deaf culture and the issues facing Deaf families. This seminar will serve as an introduction to some of these considerations.
