ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers)’s Post

We’re excited to announce that the ASME Foundation has been awarded a $3.975 million four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop and implement a national apprenticeship program in mechanical engineering technology. This program will provide additional education and training for 270 community college engineering graduates and place them into entry-level engineering technician positions. We are thrilled to collaborate with Stevens Institute of Technology, SimInsights Inc. and the National Institute for Industry and Career Advancement to launch the program.

I'm interested in the grant's language. ASME obviously made a strong case for the importance of this project. While congratulations are deserved, this also perpetuates the hierarchy of Engineering vs. Engineering Technology degrees and would increase the notion of "uselessness" toward so many engineering technology degrees that currently exist with rewarding intern programs. Hopefully the nearly $4M is put to good use and higher institutions can include the lessons learned. But I also have a healthy fear that Engineering colleges will keep the findings for themselves while Technology colleges are left to handle the impact. My hope is that this apprenticeship moves toward 6,000 hours. If it adopts 8,000 hours of OJL then they've created a work-based degree that already exists.

Anything that prevents young folks doing worthless degrees is to be celebrated.
