Kai Tak Sports Park is unveiling another milestone at the cutting-edge 5,000-seat Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground in Hong Kong with the installation of the ground's state-of-the-art "Lay and Play" turf. The "Lay and Play" technology involves the installation of mature, pre-grown turf directly onto the prepared soil, creating a lush, green sports surface. This process began with the cultivation of the turf in a dedicated nursery site located in Zhuhai, China. The turf is a hybrid blend of natural grass and artificial grass fibres, reinforced by a "Carpet hybrid" root-zone system. After 10-12 weeks of being carefully nurtured, the turf was harvested into rolls and immediately transported to Hong Kong for installation. It is truly remarkable to watch! With this milestone accomplished, the entire Kai Tak Sports Park project has now entered its final construction phase paving the way for a grand opening in 2025.

Artificial grass pitches (AGP) have become an integral part of, providing dependable surfaces. They stand up to heavy use and varied climates, enabling consistent play throughout the year. Grounds Management Association, SAPCA The Sports and Play Construction Association, UK governing bodies and associations in their latest statement on 3G pitches share interesting data: 'A properly maintained AGP can sustain up to 80 hours of use a week, providing an average of around 1,400 playing opportunities. This compares favourably to a good quality grass pitch, which can sustain just six hours a week, accommodating an average of around 100 playing opportunities.' This means many people can engage in sports and physical activity regardless of the weather. The plan to demolish and rebuild the Gabba makes a mockery of Brisbane’s commitment to a climate positive games. Being climate positive means your project sequesters more greenhouse gas than it emits in its construction and operations. While Olympic boss John Coates is arguing on the grounds of extreme cost, Brisbane has committed to delivering a climate positive games. https://lnkd.in/gT4iiHJ4 You can deliver a building today with no operational emissions, through good design, have no fossil gas reticulation and by using renewable energy. By 2030 we hopefully will have 82% renewable energy in our grid. So operational emissions should be covered. But you also need to account for the upfront embodied carbon to say you are “net zero”, let alone “climate positive”. On average, 50% of a buildings lifetime emissions are expended by the day the building is opened. A new building the size of the Gabba will have a substantial embodied carbon footprint. All that concrete and steel, and to a lesser extent aluminum and glass on an open stadium will be hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2. Every diesel truck carting demolition waste will add to the up front carbon. While we have lower carbon concrete available, we simply don’t have low embodied carbon green steel in Australia - at least not yet. As much I would like, we don’t have fleets of Tesla semitrailers powered by renewable energy delivering materials to sites. The lowest embodied emissions building is the one you don’t have to build. To its credit, 80% of the Brisbane games venues already exist. But the plan to demolish and spend billions to rebuild the Gabba flies completely in the face of Brisbanes climate positive commitment. #climateemergency #climatepositive #olympics https://lnkd.in/gxk8bNRX

#Hangzhou #AsianGames The 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 will kick off in Hangzhou on 23 September. Hong Kong will send over 800 athletes to compete, with a total delegation of nearly 1200 people, vying for 40 events, setting a record for the highest number in history🏆. The 19th Asian Games highlights the concept of “green, intelligent, frugal, and civilized”, featuring many eco-friendly elements in the venue to reduce carbon emissions and energy waste. ♻️ The Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center ("the Big Lotus") has adopted a sustainable construction approach. Although the venue is roughly the same as the Beijing National Stadium ("the Bird's Nest"), it uses 60% less steel, and the goal of reducing steel usage was incorporated into the design stage to minimize carbon emissions. The exterior walls of the Big Lotus are sprayed with a photocatalyst coating, which can decompose organic pollutants on the walls and in the air, and has the functions of disinfection, deodorisation, mould prevention and air purification. With an area of approximately 156,000 square meters, the venue's air purification capacity is equivalent to that of over 10,000 poplar trees, effectively improving environmental quality. In addition, the photocatalytic coating forms a super hydrophilic surface layer on the exterior walls, allowing dust to be washed away during rainfall, achieving a self-cleaning effect and reducing water consumption for wall cleaning. Besides, the design of the roof of the Big Lotus fills the interior with natural light, which can save more than 30% of energy per year and eliminate light flicker, minimizing the impact on athletes. With so many environmentally friendly elements in the venue, it is believed that athletes will perform better 🥇 and spectators will enjoy the games even more! Exciting News in the World of Sports Sustainability! 🌿⚽ Our Dutch E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions colleagues from Essent and Sparta Rotterdam have just inked a groundbreaking deal to transform 'Het Kasteel', one of the Netherlands' most iconic football stadiums, into a beacon of sustainability. This long-term collaboration, spanning the next 30 years, marks a significant leap forward in championing green energy within the sports industry. The transformation of 'Het Kasteel' will include the implementation of an advanced Heat and Cold Storage system, complemented by over 1,200 solar panels. This strategic move ensures a fully sustainable energy supply, effectively reducing the ecological footprint associated with the stadium. The initiative is set to generate more than 600 MWh of electricity annually, along with substantial heat and cold energy to regulate the temperature within the complex. Walter Grootveld, Director of Essent Energy Infrastructure Solutions, emphasized the importance of sustainable stadium development, stating, "Making stadiums more sustainable is a crucial part of our efforts to make the sports sector more sustainable." Grootveld expressed immense pride in contributing to the acceleration of the energy transition in the Netherlands through this collaboration. Essent will spearhead the investment in both the WKO system and the solar panels, allowing Sparta Rotterdam to concentrate on their sporting ambitions. Gearing up for action, the project is scheduled to commence next summer break, with a projected completion date set for the end of 2024. This initiative underscores Essent and Sparta Rotterdam's commitment to environmental responsibility while fostering a sustainable future for the sports community. 🌍🏟️ #Sustainability #SportsInnovation #GreenEnergyLeadership

Skateparks are more than mere environments for wheeled play and sport, they are vibrant cultural hubs in communities engaged with by generations of users and spectators. It is not commonly known that in New Zealand we have the oldest Skatepark in the world at Cannon’s Creek in Porirua built in 1974. So as these urban landscapes shift and evolve, a question arises: Should these historical designs be preserved and whether the history also embedded in these community spaces should influence their redevelopment? Check the full write-up here https://lnkd.in/gQuPXUrj So what are your thoughts, do you place value on the history of our facilities or is it better to be out with the old and in with the new?
