Did you know that nearly 40% of young people get their news from Tik-Tok (Pew Research Center? And by "young," I mean up to age 29...why which time they should know better. There is hope. At least I've got my fingers crossed. It's an organization called News Literacy Project that works with schools, journalists and interested others whose vision is to ensure that "All students in the United States are skilled in news literacy before they graduate high school, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers." Man, do we need this! Delighted to meet students from the Institute of Education, Leeson Street at the launch of Young Journalist Ireland. Our news literacy and student journalism programme, led by my colleague Lisa Buckley, teaches students to understand the principles and ethics of fact-based journalism, to think critically like a journalist by questioning information sources, to develop skills in identifying misinformation and disinformation and develop a deeper understanding of news media and how it communicates about the world around them. As part of the programme, we also partner with the Dept of Education’s OIDE schools’ support service, running workshops for teachers. Featuring some of our top editors and journalists, these cover areas such as Countering Misinformation and Disinformation, Fact-Checking, Opinion & Feature Writing, Sports Reporting, and Video Journalism. We also run free interactive workshops in schools giving students a fantastic opportunity to understand the journalistic process and pitch their own news stories to a national news editor. Here’s what he wants to tell #ewa24 attendees: - I’m attending the 2024 National Seminar in Las Vegas because [it] is an invaluable opportunity for me. As a bilingual Latino reporter in San Francisco and the Bay Area, staying informed about education and reporting is crucial. This seminar allows me to deepen my understanding of the diverse communities and challenges they face. It's essential to be connected, grasp local issues, understand bills, and address disparities within these communities effectively. Looking forward to gaining insights that will enhance my reporting perspective. - The education issue(s) I want to better cover in 2024 revolves around how teachers address racism and sexism in various parts of the Bay Area, specifically in San Francisco and on a national scale. This issue holds significant importance within minority communities. It's crucial for parents to comprehend the dynamics in the educational environments where their children study, spanning from high school to higher education. As a Latino reporter, my aim is to educate and shed light on these matters, ensuring parents are informed about what transpires in these crucial settings. - My advice to EWA members attending the National Seminar for the first time is to embrace open-minded conversations with reporters from diverse locations and perspectives. Engaging with individuals with different political beliefs is key. This experience not only enriches your knowledge but also allows you to realize that your city isn't the sole one grappling with specific issues.
