“Not only do we have the power, we have the obligation to refresh ourselves, to repair ourselves, to make ourselves new,” says civil rights attorney and scholar Sherrilyn Ifill. “That's the project and the work that's before us today, not just getting through another election.”
Ifill often looks to the history of American democracy to inform her work, especially the post-Civil War Reconstruction era when the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments transformed the Constitution — what some scholars call the country’s “second founding.” With democracy on shaky ground, social trust fraying and core principles under attack, Ifill makes the case that it’s time for another deep look. Law professor and CEO of the National Constitution Center Jeffrey Rosen joins Ifill in laying out the historical legal context for this bold idea. What would it mean to embark on America’s third founding?
