Data centres store the movies you watch and running data centres require massive amounts of electricity and water. So, how energy-intensive are they? Data centres are the backbone of our digital world, but they consume a staggering 10–50 times more energy per foot than an office building. In fact, the International Energy Association predicts that data centre energy consumption could increase to more than 1,000 TWh by 2026. To put that in perspective, it is equivalent to Germany’s or Sweden's annual energy consumption. As cloud computing emerges the enabler for modern businesses, their energy-intensive nature raises concerns about sustainability.
