Ever wondered how business valuation really works? It’s not as simple as applying a multiple and getting an answer, much like driving a manual car. You can watch instructional videos, but until you actually try it yourself, you won’t grasp the full complexity. Applying multiples is straightforward, but experience is needed to judge their appropriateness and make necessary adjustments. Even audited financials need careful examination for normalizing adjustments, whether for a small business or a multinational corporation. Filling out a DCF template isn’t hard, but choosing the right discount rate is tricky. Many people default to 10%, which is often too high for privately-held companies considering actual debt costs and specific risks. While templates are easy to fill out, their sources and relevance are what matter. The technical aspects of valuation are simple, but creating a cohesive picture of a company's value is where the challenge lies. A good valuation analyst can guide you through this process. As a business owner, learning valuation basics empowers you to see how your decisions impact your company’s value. However, truly understanding and fine-tuning the mechanisms to achieve a justifiable value requires deeper involvement. Here are some tips: Always run your business as if you might sell it tomorrow, keep your books clean, avoid mixing personal and business expenses, and expect the value to be less than you think. If it is, you now have a baseline for improvement. Need help with your business valuation? Just want to highlight the last paragraph of this post. "Here are some tips: Always run your business as if you might sell it tomorrow, keep your books clean, avoid mixing personal and business expenses, and expect the value to be less than you think. If it is, you now have a baseline for improvement." Excellent advice.
