Six years ago, I encountered a man struggling to make a living despite owning 10 acres of land. He lived in a mud house surrounded by the threat of wild elephant attacks. When asked why he wasn't farming, he explained he lacked the funds and access to credit. We offered to help him restart cultivation through joint farming, combining his land and expertise with our resources. He hesitated due to concerns about repaying the loan if his crops failed or prices dropped. To mitigate risk, we devised a plan to cover his living expenses for three months. After overcoming his initial reluctance, he resumed farming. We worked to change his farming methods and mindset, eventually yielding LKR. 100,000 from the harvest after eight months. With our support, he accessed markets and expanded his land, creating job opportunities for others. After COVID-19, we discontinued the project. Six years later, he built a better home and improved his standard of living. Now, we're committed to empowering small farmers as agri-entrepreneurs for food security, sustainable agriculture, and enhanced livelihoods." Applications for American Farmland Trust's 2024 Brighter Future Fund’s National Grant for Historically Underserved Farmers and Ranchers are now open! ☀️ $5,000 grants are available for projects related to: 1) improving farm viability 2) accessing, transferring, or permanently protecting farmland 3) adopting regenerative farming practices and increasing resilience to climate change APPLY by July 8 – link in bio! The Brighter Future Fund was launched in 2020 to assist farmers in successfully launching, growing, and sustaining farms in the face of forces impacting the food and agricultural system, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changing markets, severe weather, and climate change. Grants will be awarded in amounts up to $5,000 per project. A project may involve one or more individual farmers or farm families. Small holder farmers, in particular, stand to benefit from the reduced cost of inputs and the improved resilience that regenerative agriculture provides.

Female farmers in Yobe State, Nigeria, are embracing climate-resilient farming practices to combat food insecurity. Through the Okpara-Osim Foundation's initiative, over 200 women have received training on sustainable agricultural techniques, like cultivating crops with minimal water. This is crucial as nearly 31.8 million Nigerians face severe food insecurity, with climate change causing significant damage to farming communities.  However, challenges like funding and lack of awareness still limit the full potential of these efforts.
