Now is a great time to reflect on your accessibility efforts! This can include accessibility of physical and digital workspaces, events, and of your website and online platforms. How do you support your employees with disabilities? Are they represented in leadership? Do they have access to an ERG or BRG? Disability means different things within the community and cannot have a one size fits all approach. Society revolves around the able-bodied person and barriers are not always physical - they can include stimulation and psychological factors as well. As an individual with invisible disabilities, I do my best to advocate for myself and others both inside and outside of the workplace, while recognizing the privilege of not having appearent or visible disabilities. This means taking the time to design communications, meetings, and programs around the most disadvantages individuals so that when rolled out, it is inclusive with as many people as possible. As Disability Pride Month comes to an end, let's take a moment to reflect and challenge our perceptions of disability. Disability is multifaceted, with many people living with invisible disabilities that we might not recognise at first glance.We must open our eyes and broaden our understanding, viewing disability holistically. When we challenge our assumptions and work towards inclusivity, we make the world a better place for everyone. Let's continue disability pride beyond July, let's move beyond the medical and social models of disability and start embracing the disabled community through a holistic lens. Great piece regarding disability and the hidden juggling act that many people have to undertake to function and fulfill roles often in isolation, fear of loss opportunities or judgement. With people with disabilities making up around 24% of the population and even more who go undiagnosed or undisclosed it’s vital that organisations can support those in the workplace. Disability Pride started as a day of celebration in 1990, the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed. By 2015, this celebration expanded into an entire month, and since then, Disability Pride Month has been celebrated globally each July.   Disability Pride Month can mean different things to each individual. I view it as an opportunity to start conversations and raise awareness among people who are not part of the disabled community on how to be better allies and support inclusivity.   CFA Institute remains committed to inclusivity and fairness for all, creating better work environments.
