A counselor in training (CIT) program can not only help current staffing needs by having extra hands on deck, it’s also a feeder program to provide a pipeline of quality paid counselors who will already have training and experience. 🎯 Eugene R. Ferrara, Chief Instructor at the Executive Protection Institute and Nine Lives Associates member, believes that sometimes people undertake particular training programs thinking that job opportunities come attached to them. There is some truth in there, as training improves performance and improved performance leads to more job prospects, but it doesn’t guarantee employment. 🔀 “Opportunity and ability are on random courses; once in a while they cross.” - as one of Eugene’s former bosses told him. Being employable requires more than job knowledge and skills. 👤 Most employers also look for things like appearance, communication, social skills, and that “likeability” factor (you can refer to our post on soft skills for more information on this subject). Training academies have limited knowledge of a student’s employability. For this reason, they cannot guarantee employment; they are not synonymous with employment agencies. You cannot, therefore, expect a training program to hand you a job on a silver platter. 🔎 What you can do is to properly research the reputation and industry standing of the academy you plan to enroll into, what folks in the know think about it, and to give your full dedication to the training program you undertake. Then it’s on you to seal the deal. There is another secret to this whole employability thing, and we have written about it in a post from last week, so make sure you check that one, too. Yesterday we delivered a Resident Engagement Strategy (RES) training session to almost 90 delegates for ARMA (Now part of The Property Institute). This session, it is understood, is one of the biggest ARMA training courses ever run. We took the delegates through not only the legal duties to develop and maintain their RES but also how they can be developed, what is needed - including the need to capture and obtain demographic information, as well as information about residents needs and preferences on how they should be consulted and what languages should be used.  During the session, the delegates were asked to respond to a number of online polls where it was found that: - The vast majority of managing agents and PAPs (74% of respondents) had not surveyed residents and owners to determine specific needs and preferences. - That a quarter (25%) of managing agents who responded were supporting PAPs in developing Resident Engagement Strategies outside of their agreements and therefore are not being recompensed. - That where a client had more than one building on a development that only 16% of those who responded were developing or planning to develop the engagement strategies for each building, with many opting to develop one strategy to cover all buildings despite the guidance issued by the Building Safety Regulator. We have learned it takes time to build a Resident Engagement Strategy and there are a number of elements required to develop it. So, it's important to get ahead and start planning your RES now so you can be ready for your application to the BSR when the time comes. A Slow Discovery – Day Four I am continuing my life journey to find the answer to the question, “What do you want to do with the rest of your life, Debra?” I started working as a GP secretary with no medical background or audio-typing skills, but I was a quick learner. Accuracy in this job was of vital importance. I didn’t want to be responsible for somebody getting a hospital appointment for their left knee to be replaced when it was actually their left ventricle that was the problem. Then came my life-changing opportunity. Seeing an advert for a training administrator post seemed interesting. In that role, I helped to create and maintain the administration for a vocational training company. I learned what the different policies and procedures were for, why the documentation was needed, and how it could be improved. You might say I was stepping into the training world without realising it. I had a fantastic manager, Sue, who, for some reason, thought that I would make a good trainer and teacher and advised me to attend evening college classes to obtain my Adult Teacher’s Certificate. Me, in a teaching role? How on earth would I ever be good enough for that? But the next few years flew by; I passed my 730(7) Teacher’s Certificate, became a vocational assessor, and then an internal verifier. I moved abroad, well to Scotland, and became an external verifier working for various awarding bodies. Without even hunting, I found a rather nice Scotsman named Jim, who asked me to marry him. When he asked me, he had a large bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk in his hand. It was a no-brainer! Then, guess what I did. I set up my very own training company. Me. The owner of a training company! Go me! But did I have the answer to the question, “What do you want to do for the rest of your life, Debra?” I don’t think I did. Do you know? Intrigued? Watch out for Day Five
