Way to go, Megan Mittelstadt, Ph.D. and Leah Carmichael! Meg and Leah were recent guests on the Tea for Teaching podcast and spoke about UGA's breadth of active learning initiatives and resources. Meg and Leah shared the history of active learning, and they talked about how our campus-wide active learning culture has expanded teaching strategies for faculty, enhanced classrooms to facilitate learning, and provided students more engaging learning experiences. Check out this episode to learn more about UGA's multifaceted approach to active learning!
While there is compelling evidence that active learning results in increased student learning, these initiatives often face resistance from students and faculty. In this episode, Megan Mittelstadt and Leah Carmichael join us to discuss the active learning initiative at the University of Georgia that provides professional development for faculty, active learning training for students, and for the redesign of classroom spaces. Meg is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Georgia. Leah is the Director of Active Learning, also at the University of Georgia. Meet the new Dean of Programs at KLU, Prof. Alexander Himme: "What excites me is seeing this 'wow' effect with the students. Guiding them, helping them and then seeing how they successfully apply what they've learned. That motivates me." In our interview, the five-time Best Teacher Award winner at KLU shares his perspective on his new role, his motivation and what makes KLU special for him. "I think the reason we have such incredibly good teaching is because our professors are always involved in research and incorporate current topics from their research into their teaching. [...] Second, the interaction - in group work, case studies, discussions, role plays, breakouts, and all this in small classes. Third, we really focus on each and every student and perceive them individually. In a way, that is our DNA at KLU." Read the full interview on our website: https://lnkd.in/e_D-mJJB
