🌙 My entire life has been nontraditional, and that included uprooting the life I built at university the same day I graduated. I didn’t have the same opportunities as many of my classmates. I didn’t really have these incredible bonds with my professors, and I didn’t get to go into my field once I graduated. 👁️ School was very hard, but I found myself after obtaining my Bachelors, when so many barriers almost prevented me. For the past 12 years, I’ve been working to become the best version of myself. As when you grow up low-income, queer, child of immigrants, and a person of color, you are what you make yourself. 🔮 I’ve worked for a career that was never promised, but foretold in my imagination. With my business cards and name tag, I can say I’m official with my first month in as the City of Burien’s, Communications Specialist! ✨ In many jobs over the years, I have been the first person to include language in my credentials, shifting the work culture ever so slightly. I have understood the importance of taking up space and honoring my cultural identity in a professional setting. It was on this sole principle of authenticity that I channeled during my interviews for this role. It’s taken me over a decade to return to my path, and I’m so excited to foresee so many opportunities to manifest. #BreakingBarriers #FirstGen #Communications #CityOfBurien #RepresentationMatters #Queer #ItsNeverTooLate

At Reach, it seems that we have developed some of our own words. We celebrate Reachiversaies and call team members, Reachers, but the word I like most is "Reachify". Being in People Operations, I say this word daily. My definition of this verb is to take something and flip it sideways, approach the challenge with deep curiosity, find a balance between head and heart, and never settle for the "this is the way it has always been done". How do we address "people" issues in a Reachified way? How do you help establish guardrails and frameworks so that people can succeed, but not impose policies and red tape where it is not needed (or welcomed)? How do we approach recruiting in a way that is welcoming, inclusive, and focuses simultaneously on getting the best person for our team while prioritizing the applicant experience? How do we support learning and development so that each team member can truly thrive and flourish as a human being? The list goes on and on. It is this level of creative, people-centered thinking that has me excited about the week to come. At Reach, even the role of People Operations is Reachified!
