Behold the Alaska Pipeline, a testament to human innovation against the backdrop of nature's grandeur. 🏞️ Spanning the landscape with its industrial might, it represents both the challenges and achievements of engineering in the wilderness. Adjacent to the road, it commands attention, yet its presence is not without controversy. While some may see it as a symbol of progress and economic vitality, others may lament its impact on the pristine Alaskan scenery. Nevertheless, beside the pipeline lies a serene pond, reflecting the surrounding beauty and offering a moment of tranquility amidst the industrial landscape. Here, amidst the clash of industry and nature, one can ponder the complex relationship between human development and the environment. The Alaska Pipeline may not fit traditional notions of beauty, but its presence is undeniable, shaping both the physical and cultural landscape of the Last Frontier. #AlaskaPipeline #EngineeringMarvel #Nature'sContrast

"Imagine if protecting the fragile underwater ecosystems and reaching business goals were simultaneously achievable. Imagine if a vessel operator could make valuable contributions to global initiatives without changing their daily operations. Imagine if our map of the seafloor here on Earth was as detailed as our map of the surface of Mars. At FarSounder, we have discovered that these first two ideals are actually a reality, and support the third dream. Safety at sea is a top priority for the marine industry for many reasons. Not only is safety important to a successful voyage and achieving business objectives, but also, for protecting the ecosystem. It is something many of us think about everyday while working to find ways to improve safety to keep our business strong, and in turn, the ecosystem thriving." Read Cassie's article in the latest issue of Sea Technology magazine discussing how FarSounder leads by example in promoting community contributions to Seabed 2030 via the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)'s crowdsourced bathymetry initiative. https://lnkd.in/e98mupUE #hydrospatial #oceanscience #csb #forwardlookingsonar

Cleanup mission begins on Barents Sea coast in Nenets Region "Over the project's three seasons, we have collected almost 500 tons of waste," Clean Arctic's leader Andrey Nagibin pointed out August 8/ The Clean Arctic project's team of volunteers started cleaning the Barents Sea coast near the village of Stary Varandey in the Nenets Autonomous Region, the local administration's press service said. "Volunteers will collect waste and scrap metal near the village of Stary Varandey. Traditionally, the environmental project is supported by Lukoil-Perm," the press service said. "The team, that has left for the Barents Sea coast, features 16 federal and local volunteers." The volunteers come from seven regions: Rostov, Moscow, Volgograd, Orenburg, Irkutsk, Stavropol and Krasnodar. "Traditionally, the mission will continue for almost two weeks - the cleaning's scale is significant. Over the project's three seasons, we have collected almost 500 tons of waste," the press service quoted Clean Arctic's leader Andrey Nagibin as saying. The Lukoil-Perm Company supports the project by providing air transport to take volunteers from Naryan-Mar to Old Varandey and back, as well as their accommodation and meals, and also has provided transport to handle bulky waste. The Clean Arctic project began in 2021. Captain of the 50 Let Pobedy nuclear-powered Arctic-class icebreaker Dmitry Lobusov, and Gennady Antokhin, Captain on FESCO’s ships from 1982 to 2012, are the project’s authors. Clean Arctic attracts federal and local volunteers to missions in the Russian Arctic's every region. #business #finance #financialservices

Your life depends on the ocean, even if you live nowhere near it. That's because the world’s largest ecosystem provides 50% of the oxygen, absorbs CO2 to combat climate change and sustains fish populations. Sadly, ocean life has been declining worldwide. The world's newest whale, the Rice's whale, is already almost gone. 🐋 Discovered in 2021, The Gulf of Mexico Rice’s whale is now at risk of going extinct because of oil and gas development in the Gulf. A recent legal ruling further jeopardizes these last few whales' survival by allowing even more drilling in their habitat. Earthjustice is fighting back in court to reestablish needed protections, but we can’t succeed alone. See below how to send a letter in support of the cause. #ocean #biodiversity #oceanconservation #protecttheplanet https://lnkd.in/g8mu6r7A

A good occasion to meet our colleague Knut Hartmann: The IHO Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission (AHRC) meeting in Tromsø, Norway. On 3rd September, Knut will elaborate on how hydrographic capacity building can benefit from satellite-based information. The Arctic Commission - founded in 2010 and chaired by Birte Noer Borrevik - is one of 15 regional IHO commissions. These unite international experts to advance mutual hydrographic and chart production problems, plan joint survey operations, and resolve schemes for medium and large-scale international chart coverage in their regions. In this context, the ARHC's specific target is to improve 🌐 hydrographic awareness, 🗺 nautical charting, 🌍 and marine environmental protection in the Arctic. We're always glad to contribute. Read more about the commission's scope and IHO's work here: https://lnkd.in/dJh8sTDx International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) #hydrospatial #arctic #hydrography #remotesensing #marine #protection

Arctic Capacity is navigating uncharted territory in Greenland “There was terrible weather with fog and snowfall and absolutely no visibility - a total whiteout, where we drove blindly. The low visibility made it impossible to navigate a good route and we got stuck in the slush ice below the snow crust and had to do 70-75 winch recoverys anchored in the ice or to one of the other cars. We did this over a distance of 200 kilometers,” says Henrik Lassen Mastering the complexities of logistics and strategic operations in some of the world's most forbidding terrains, Arctic Capacity, under the seasoned leadership of Henrik Lassen, a former Sirius Patrol leader, showcases exceptional expertise in navigating Greenland's remote areas. Innovative strategies and meticulous planning empower clients from the raw materials industry and scientific research sectors to achieve their goals in extreme environments. In May 2023, Arctic Capacity was contracted by an Australian mineral exploration company to lead an expedition. The mission involved navigating three amphibious all-terrain vehicles from Constable Pynt in East Greenland, where they had been delivered, and then driving 200 kilometers north through Greenland's most impassable terrain.
