Another good step in the long slow process of restoring the watershed of the L.A. Basin. Restoration of the historically connected L.A. & Rio Hondo Rivers and Ballona Creek watersheds is critical to aiding the endangered southern steelhead by allowing them to migrate up from the ocean to their spawning grounds in the Santa Monica, San Gabriel and San Bernadino Mountains.
An effort led by the Army Corps of Engineers has fizzled out

Watch this video to see two new state-of-the-art firefighting response vessels designed by Incat Crowther in operation for the Port Authority of New South Wales. The vessels, named Burra and Girawaa, are designed to play a pivotal role in major on-water incidents, including firefighting operations. Burra and Girawaa have the ability to pump 16,000 litres of sea water per minute – equivalent to the capacity of four large fire engines. Capable of travelling in shallow water, the vessels can travel at speeds of up to 27 knots and have the ability to turn 365 degrees in 60 metres, while travelling at 20 knots. Learn more about Burra and Girawaa, the fastest response vessels ever commissioned by the Port Authority of NSW here – https://bit.ly/3vvWoP6 #digitalshipbuilding #shipbuilding #marinedesign #navalarchitect #navaldesign #marinearchitect #navalarchitecture #commercialmarine #maritimeindustry #maritime #fireboat #emergencyresponse #responsevessel #workboats #workboat #emergencymanagement #searchandrescue #firefighting #sydney

The estimated cost of $1.7 to $1.9 billion to rebuild the Key Bridge is staggering, and the projected completion date of fall 2028 means that the region will have to adapt to the absence of this critical infrastructure for several years.

The successful restoration of full access to the port within a bit over two months highlights the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage and Diving, and the multitude of federal, state, and local agencies. These guys have floodwater jurisdiction; capitalists would be motivated to re-route it and to sell it to places that need it like, quickly, but could also over-sell and damage river ecosystems if not very carefully regulated. I do think the Colorado-serviced region should pay significantly more for its water, even if said water is stabilized; you don't want to motivate population booms that re-destabilize that water, by not making it do so, among a few other more nitpicky points I can consider regarding fairness of draining a river and having it recovered for your a$$. And the money should go back to the responsible civilians along the Mississippi and the Missouri who should havebthe water rights. Idk. Hopefully they can all figure it out. That being said, the labor will be outsourced, and I think we have a natural knack for it in our physiques, but need better safety training and maybe etc. for construction workers. Those safety stats are terrible. Or maybe it will just snow forever in the Rockies, out-doing that 10.3% snowpack recovery loss from thermal change effects minus greenery change effects calculated in that recent paper, and we'll never need to worry again. Or we could let the Colorado-serviced region dry up and displace 40 million people. All good options.

As I read this WSJ article, I can't help but think of Senator Barkley's accidental disclosure of sensitive information. In the annals of history, Senator Alben W. Barkley's inadvertent disclosure during World War II serves as a profound lesson in the stewardship of strategic assets. Representing Kentucky, Barkley, through a public communication misstep, revealed the superior diving capabilities of American submarines over Japanese torpedoes, inadvertently exposing a crucial advantage in the naval arms race. This episode not only underscores the fragility of strategic advantages but also the paramount importance of safeguarding sensitive information. Barkley's narrative is more than just a cautionary tale; it's a stark reminder of the delicate balance between transparency and operational security, especially concerning national security assets. The revelation brought to light the complexities and potential repercussions of handling classified information, demonstrating how easily strategic advantages can be compromised. This incident, while rooted in a bygone era, remains ever relevant, offering invaluable insights into the stewardship of strategic assets. It compels us to consider the broader implications of information security and the collective responsibility to protect the nation's competitive edges. Barkley's story is a testament to the enduring significance of vigilance, discretion, and the judicious management of information that underpins the safety and efficacy of strategic national assets. #StrategicAssets #InformationSecurity #NationalSecurity #HistoricalInsights #LeadershipLessons #OperationalSecurity https://lnkd.in/gK2EjKiY
