MICROSOFT's cloud AI demand is exceeding supply even after 79% surge in capital spending, it is a sign that Generative AI is not scalable and lacks the traditional advantage found among cloud based applications, i.e., the economy of scale. Prior to Generative AI, all "Software As A Service" (SAAS) applications share a common characteristic, that is the economy of scale, i.e., the more is the adoption, the lower is the cost and the higher is the margin. But with Generative AI, it is showing what many have been suspecting that the high hardware and energy cost behind every use of Generative AI is not sustainable in terms of profitability, load balancing and scale. Very interesting report and must read. I liked 3 realities authors predicted. There are three possible realities we expect to see in the foreseeable future on who will capture the most value in this model layer fight: - In Reality 1, AI models will be commoditized, similar to compute or oil, becoming essential assets for global business operations. The ultimate value in the AI ecosystem will be captured by compute and cloud service providers, marketplaces, and applications — not by the models themselves. - Reality 2 suggests that a few AI Model Giants, backed by Big Tech strategics or corporate VCs, will dominate the foundational model ecosystem, following a trend similar to the Cloud Wars. - Reality 3 envisions an AI model economy resembling the diverse and popular potato chip market, where various model companies thrive due to unique use cases like modalities, performance, latency, cost, and security, allowing for their survival.  « #Gen #AI and the #cloud Gen AI is more than a form of #technology #infrastructure. It’s part of a long-term trend of the cloud influencing the #transformation of business functions. Its impact has been felt particularly keenly among cloud service providers (CSPs) – not least because it uses vast amounts of #cloud #computing #power. But its effects go much further. It has subtly changed the balance of power between cloud and non-cloud infrastructure providers. Plenty of undifferentiated workloads need commodity storage and compute, whether or not they’re on the #cloud. But more and more organisations are now creating workloads that require cloud-based, #gen-#AI #services – and therefore the public cloud. However, this explosion in demand has come up against a bottleneck: a shortage of #AI chips. The hyperscalers reacted well to these constraints, but prices rose as a result. Other providers had to ration graphics processing units. #AI capabilities command higher prices (and are more expensive to develop). These premium prices may prompt #CSPs to #increase margins on less lucrative, more commoditised compute and storage services: optimising margins where capacity is finite would be a rational #economic #response. As consumption increases, the hyperscalers in particular will seek profitability. Gen AI has also forced CSPs to think more carefully about the #ethics of their services.
