It's Customer Service Week! 🎉 Back in the 2000s, before the UK introduced the points-based immigration system in 2008, students had to fill out their visa forms by hand. These 16-pagers were a drag and made an already tense and stressful process even more daunting for students. One day, I asked Clare Rawlins if I could print these application forms in colour - just for Kaplan students. (Back then, colour printing wasn’t as common, and it wasn't the cheapest option either.) To my surprise, she said yes! That simple “yes” made a world of difference. Those colourful, neatly printed forms became a little bright spot amidst the nerves. And having them seemed to help students feel special. They felt better prepared and a little more confident—like someone was taking them seriously and cheering them on in their journey. All because a line manager cared enough to say yes to a 'little thing'. Great customer service isn't always about grand gestures. It’s the little things, the moments that show someone does care. Whether it's comping a meal, remembering a detail, printing forms in color, or just making a customer feel heard - these are the experiences we remember. @Amit Sevak, The Future of Standardized Testing and ETS's Strategic Pivot The future of standardized admission testing is undeniably heading towards extinction. As Harry Feder, Executive Director of FairTest, points out, "Test-optional policies continue to dominate at national universities, state flagships, and selective liberal arts colleges because they typically result in more applicants, academically stronger applicants, and more diversity." This trend significantly threatens ETS's financial future, prompting them to consider a controversial shift towards soft skills assessments. However, creating such assessments is fraught with challenges. Soft skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity are inherently complex and multifaceted, making them difficult to quantify and measure accurately. Attempting to standardize these amorphous personal attributes is akin to trying to domesticate the untamable. It's a vain pursuit that risks misrepresenting the very nature of these skills. Even if ETS could develop reliable soft skills assessments, the consequences could be disastrous. Imagine the chaos and inequality from attempting to rank individuals on such subjective criteria. How can one definitively say whether Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven, or Nikola Tesla was more creative? Such comparisons are inherently flawed and inevitably lead to biased and unfair evaluations. Moreover, ETS's history of cheating accusations raises serious concerns. They have faced numerous lawsuits from test-takers claiming wrongful accusations. If standardized tests with clear-cut answers have led to such disputes, one can only imagine the surge in litigation when subjective skills assessments are introduced. ETS is at a crossroads. Like any company facing disruption, it must choose to evolve or fade into obsolescence. ETS must consider whether venturing into the murky waters of soft skills assessment is the right path forward. * * * Let us imagine a different path. ETS envisions a revolutionary language-learning solution with the following key features: Universal accessibility: Learn any language with support in your native tongue. Rapid fluency: Achieve fluency in any language in approximately 12 months through implicit, subconscious training. Innovative approach: Combine AI, subconscious training, and guided self-learning for optimal results. Fluency development and measurement: Develop and assess fluency regardless of cognitive abilities, transforming testing into integrated lesson drills. Personalized learning: Utilize AI to create customized vocational training and self-personalized lessons. This solution aims to eliminate the need for standardized language tests by providing a comprehensive certificate of completion detailing language skills and achievements.
Nicholas Lemann’s new book asks an important question—where is standardized testing going? Back in 2016, most four-year colleges required standardized tests for admissions. Today, fewer than 8% do. It’s clear that we need to move the conversation forward. The conversation we should have is about test vs. measurement. What are all the ways we can measure to help people? Imagine assessments that capture real-world abilities—portfolios of work, virtual labs, hands-on experience, performance-based evaluations that more accurately measure a student, holistically.
