Long-distance caregiving feels distant. Its impact – still close to home. I grew up with both of my grandmothers, so moving to Canada meant finding new ways to support them from afar. From offering emotional support over video calls (where I can see only their forehead) to helping coordinate medical information, I quickly learned that caregiving isn’t always hands-on. Sometimes, it’s about being present in any way possible, even from thousands of miles away. Yet, long-distance caregivers are often overlooked. They’re still coordinating, problem-solving, and emotionally supporting loved ones—they’re just doing it differently. Many U.S. states and Canadian provinces offer support specifically for long-distance caregivers of their residents, providing resources like respite care, training, and coordination services to help them manage care from afar. I am *convinced* we can do more! What about workplaces? Health systems? Communities? Media? Technology giants? How can we better recognize the impact and needs of long-distance caregivers? How can we enhance support networks for them? If you’re a long-distance caregiver, know that your role is seen and valued. Let’s bring more attention to this unique caregiving experience. #Caregiving #LongDistanceCaregiving #FamilySupport #CaregiverRecognition #Healthcare #Aging #SupportSystems

Caregivers play a crucial role in our healthcare and social systems, but how often do we pause to understand who they are and how they see themselves? Caregiver identity theory provides a powerful lens to explore this dynamic. This theory highlights how caregivers develop their sense of self as they navigate their responsibilities. It’s not just about the tasks they perform—it’s about their evolving identity as they transition through different phases of caregiving. From initially stepping into the role to balancing personal boundaries and navigating long-term commitment, their identity continuously shifts. Why does this matter? Because recognizing these transitions can improve the way we provide support. By understanding a caregiver’s unique journey, we can empower them to maintain their own well-being while delivering care. At, At Home Harmony, we strive to work with caregivers—not just as allies in care, but as individuals with unique goals, challenges, and stories. Supporting their identity isn’t just good practice—it’s essential for building a compassionate, sustainable system of care. 📅 On Friday December 6th I will be presenting on caregiver identity theory and how CMS' new program, GUIDE, supports individuals living with Dementia and their caregivers at Saint Mary's Wood AL with Partners in HealthCare. #Caregiving #Healthcare #CaregiverIdentity #SupportCaregivers #CompassionInCare #AtHomeHarmony #GUIDE

The sun is finally here (we think), and it’s a good job because it’s National Walking Month! Why is walking so important for people in care? 1️⃣ Improves Mobility and Flexibility: Regular walking can help maintain joint function and prevent the stiffness associated with arthritis. 2️⃣ Reduces Risk of Falls: By improving strength, balance, and coordination, walking can help reduce the likelihood of falls among the elderly. 3️⃣ Cognitive Function: Regular physical activity like walking has been shown to lower the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. 4️⃣ Adaptability: Walking can be easily adapted to fit the physical capabilities of the individual, whether that's a slow stroll in the park or more brisk walking in a group setting. Remember, if you’re unable to walk, getting outside is still something we’ll encourage if you’re open to it.
