All of us will age. If we are lucky, that is. Being able to age gracefully means that we are living a good and long life, having overcome many trials and tribulations that the journey of life has a penchant to throw at us. With increasing life- and health-spans, we have to relook many of our laws, regulations, and policies, to ensure that they remain appropriate and fit-for-purpose. One example is artificial age caps or limits. In the case of driving, it would be disproportionate and unjust if we lose our licence to drive simply because we hit a certain age. After all, any cursory glance at the statistics will show that drivers of all ages are involved in traffic accidents. A better balance between individual dignity and freedom, and public safety, is requiring periodic medical assessments to look into our cognitive and physiological health and fitness to drive, past a certain age. Where necessary, exams can also be mandated to assess drivers' actual ability to navigate their vehicles safely and properly on the road. Going beyond laws and policies, as a society, we also need to ensure that our public infrastructure and facilities meet the needs of the aged, including longer road-crossing times for pedestrians, installation of ramps and handlebars in building entrances, improved public transportation options in terms of reach, convenience and accessibility, adoption of autonomous vehicles for popular routes, etc. It will be ironic if we live till a ripe old age, only to be tripped up, no pun intended, by anachronistic laws and/or inadequate public infrastructures. #ageing #publicpolicy
