An exciting day for Progress Power with the Federal Government announcing the Springvale Energy Hub project is one of only six large-scale battery projects, out of more than 100 applications, to receive backing under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). The CIS is in place to help fast track Australia’s #renewableenergytransition.     Progress Power’s Springvale Energy Hub will be Australia’s first utility-scale #renewableenergy facility built on a metropolitan #landfill. The innovative multi-stage development will comprise #batterystorage, #solar and other emerging sustainable technologies.     The initial stage includes a 115 MW/230MWh #BatteryEnergyStorageSystem (BESS) that will supply the National Energy Market with enough energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes.    Reflecting on today’s announcement, I’m most proud that the successful CIS bid is evidence of Progress Power’s commitment to contributing positively to the local community. The application required proponents to demonstrate the benefits to local supply chains, local jobs and First Nations peoples, and the successful result is a testament to this.     Our congratulations go to the other five proponents across Victoria and South Australia with successful bids. We look forward to continuing to work through the process with the goal that the Springvale Energy Hub will make a substantial contribution to Victoria’s #renewable energy and #storage goals. 

The Midlands Engine has now launched its landmark  Energy Security White Paper, setting out a vision and roadmap to deliver secure, low carbon energy and unlock economic growth across the region - a paper that Opergy has helped to build alongside Metro Dynamics and the Midlands Engine Partnership.  This paper looks at the innovative projects the Midlands is home to that will help deliver the clean energy transition, such as Nottinghamshire's STEP fusion programme, Coventry's Greenpower Park and the Humber 2030 vision, as well as the integrated energy system it is pioneering and the green jobs revolution it could drive - almost 200,000 new green jobs in low carbon hydrogen, clean energy and smart energy systems clusters by 2041. To really capitalise on these strengths, the region wants to work with government and its agencies, calling for it to scale clean energy projects in the Midlands across a range of mature and new energy vectors, and establish six key enablers of the clean energy transition opportunity - integrated regional energy system governance and planning; planning regulation; finance and investment; skills and workforce; supply chain development; and grid infrastructure. If this roadmap is followed, the Midlands, government and its agencies will be able to: ➡️ See the region become an 'early adopter' of the new Regional Energy Strategic Plan function. ➡️ Scale and invest in clean energy, including through accelerating leasing and planning approvals for new offshore wind development and using insights from Local Area Energy Plans to develop a pipeline of viable sites for renewables and low carbon generation. ➡️ Ensure a skilled workforce, including by developing and scaling new models of skills provision. ➡️ Develop supply chains around specific clusters and generation opportunities in the Midlands. Delivering this together will see the Midlands fulfil its potential in ensuring the integrated, independent and resilient energy system that both the region and the wider UK need to deliver net zero carbon growth. ILI Group secures consent for 100MW BESS in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The approval marks the third big milestone in ILI Group’s ambitions to strengthen the energy infrastructure in Scotland and support the energy transition. The previous two projects approved in the Q4’2024 were the 200MW Whitehill project and the 50MW Lochluichart project, which brings the joint capacity to 350MW. Australian Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has confirmed an overwhelming response to the first national Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) tender, with over 40 GW of variable renewables projects registered. This historic scheme aims to boost Australia's clean energy transition by adding new dispatchable renewable capacity. This initiative is crucial in identifying key opportunities and challenges within the supply chain for components such as blades, towers, and monopiles. South Australia’s future is looking even brighter. A major new electricity transmission project to power South Australia’s clean energy future and support the State’s Prosperity Project has today been declared actionable by the Australian Energy Market Operator. The project – known as the Green Energy Network – will ensure South Australia can harness the economic benefits of large-scale renewable energy projects, while continuing to safeguard the reliability and security of the State’s power network for households and businesses. Green Energy Network has the potential to play a critical role to make Adelaide’s energy supply more diverse and resilient to extreme weather, particularly bushfires. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Innovation Fund Denmark is providing 💰$4.2M for research to improve mooring technologies and methods, which are used to secure floating platforms to the sea floor, to advance floating offshore wind🌪 energy systems toward cost-effective commercialization and wide-scale deployment. DOE and Innovation Fund Denmark expect to seek proposals addressing five topic areas. 🔹 Compatibility strategies for mooring, cabling, and coexistence: Develop methods to reduce the impact of cables and mooring lines on other ocean users and the environment, and to advance opportunities for positive impacts. 🔹 Mass-producible, high-reliability moorings: Enable mass production of mooring components at the scale needed to supply floating offshore wind arrays of at least 500 MW of installed capacity. 🔹 Novel station-keeping systems and components: Research development, demonstration, or commercialization of technology to prevent failures, decrease costs, improve performance, or increase the capacity of floating offshore wind energy mooring systems. 🔹 Monitoring and inspection technologies for moorings: Develop sensor systems, remote inspection methods, maintenance strategies, and data collection and processing approaches that can better evaluate the health and reliability of subsea components for commercial-scale floating offshore wind energy arrays. 🔹 Open Topic: Research and development that more broadly supports mooring systems for industry-scale deployment of floating offshore wind energy. NESO to develop Strategic Spatial Energy Plan The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has been commissioned by the UK, Scottish and Welsh Governments to develop the first Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) for Great Britain. The SSEP will take a holistic approach to national planning for electricity and hydrogen in Great Britain to identify optimal locations for these assets, it said. The first task will be to develop and consult on the methodology for the SSEP, which will set out how the plan will be produced, with NESO conducting economic modelling to identify potential cost-effective locations for future GB electricity and hydrogen infrastructure, within energy security, decarbonisation, and environmental constraints. Views from the community will be fed into the modelling, which will influence the outcomes, and the plan will set out several “pathway options” on how the energy system could look in the future.
