R e o p e n i n g Today, the ‘Deutsches Archäologisches Institut’ (DAI) finally celebrates its grand #reopening after almost ten years of extensive renovations! The DAI was built in 1962 and is located in the centre of Rome. It comprises five above-ground floors, an attic, and two basement floors, and houses one of the largest specialised research libraries for classical archaeology worldwide. The construction work included demolishing and reconstructing large parts of the building. Great importance was attached to preserving the existing materials, the room structure, and its functionality. The entire building was modernised according to the latest technical standards. To make the existing structure earthquake-proof, we analysed the compressive strength of the concrete and the tensile strength of the existing reinforcement. Existing load-bearing structures were reinforced with stainless steel lamellae, the so-called CAM© system if necessary. According to the guiding principle for earthquakes, ‘Flexibility is better than rigidity!’ we minimised the interventions in the existing structure and the erection of new reinforced concrete walls. As part of a team with the architects Insula srl and Wenzel + Wenzel, we supported this outstanding project with our structural engineering and building physics expertise. #earthquakeproof #structuralengineering #existingstructure #maintenance #renovation

FDES are often labelled ‘the French equivalent of EPDs’. However, with qualitive data about health and safety contribution, these documents are a little different. Required for construction products in France, they provide essential transparency which empowers architects and construction professionals to make well-informed decisions. ℹ️ Learn more about FDES in our latest knowledge article: https://ow.ly/k3Tm50TQNUf #FDES #INIES #Construction #FrenchConstruction #SustainableConstruction #FrenchArchitecture #SustainableArchitecture #HealthAndSafety #HealthAndWellbeing #KLAW #Kingspan

What can you learn from common mergansers? Common mergansers use their excellent eyesight to find prey underwater while swimming on the surface. They are clumsy on the ground but can run very fast, especially on the water surface, just before taking off. Standing above the #CorinthCanal outside of Athens, with my Timmons Group bandana in hand, I couldn't help but be astonished by the feats of infrastructure that connect us across the world. The Corinth Canal is a 6.4km long (about 4 mile) dug canal in the Isthmus of Corinth, separating the Peloponnese region from the Greek mainland. The canal is only 24m wide (about 80ft) at sea level. Construction began in 67 AD and was not completed until 1893, making it one of the longest-awaited municipal projects in the world 😮 Ancient engineering like the Corinth Canal reminds us just how old some of these design practices are. At Timmons Group, we’re proud to continue that legacy of designing infrastructure that not only makes life better but just plain livable 🌎 (Can you imagine life without infrastructure?!) Here’s to the bridges, canals, roadways, and everything in between—past and present—that make our world thrive 🌉🌊🛣 #Infrastructure #CivilEngineering #TimmonsGroup #BuildingTheFuture #TravelingWithTG

Did you know the Romans had mad concrete skills?! 🏛️ Roman mastery of durable concrete over 2,200 years ago led to marvels like aqueducts, sprawling roads, and stunning temples that have stood the test of time for centuries. 🌉 From the towering aqueducts that supplied clean water to entire cities, to roads that spanned and connected their empire, public baths where communities gathered, and awe-inspiring bridges—Roman concrete was the backbone for this great ancient civilization. While our concrete innovations have evolved from the blend of volcanic ash, lime, and seawater-created structures of ancient Rome, there’s a lesson to be learned from these ancient engineers: durable, sustainable infrastructure remains a cornerstone of civilization. Want to learn more about extending the life of your infrastructure assets? Let’s chat! ICC-IMS.com #AncientEngineering #RomanConcrete

🎧 ONLINE EVENT ⚰️ 26 MARCH 📅 How do we mourn concrete? Can we keep building in concrete? Has embodied carbon caught up with our concrete addiction, and what does this mean for concrete follies like M-Pavilion? In this, our first event of 2024, ACAN Australia will lay concrete to rest. We will discuss concrete's material histories as a geology of the Anthropocene and even as a symptom of chromophobia. And what about Tadao Ando and Melbourne's 2024 M-Pavilion? We will estimate—by using the latest embodied carbon tools—just how much embodied carbon might be in the M-Pavilion—or is this drop in our concrete tomb not enough to matter? Or is concrete now in palliative care and as architects, is it time to grieve? #onlineevent #embodiedcarbon #deathofconcrete #australia #careersinarchitecture #acanaustralia https://wix.to/mpsGToL

Agia Mavra Bridge: Greece's only floating bridge, connecting Lefkada Island to the mainland for over 30 years, enhancing both accessibility and preserving historical significance. Greece's only floating bridge, "Agia Mavra," connects Lefkada Island to the mainland. This metal floating bridge, located at the "Castle" area, has been in operation for over 30 years. It was built following a decision by the Lefkada prefectural council, approved in the spring of 1985. Lefkada, part of the Ionian Sea, was once connected to the mainland even in ancient times. Along with Evia, it is one of only two Greek islands connected to the rest of Greece by road. The bridge plays a crucial role in facilitating transportation to and from the island, enhancing access to its picturesque beauty while maintaining historical significance. video rights : Respective owners DM for removal/credits #bridge #engineering #technology #civilengineering #civilconstruction #engenharia #engenhariacivil #construction #architecture #engenheiro #engenheirocivil
