As a new membership year gets underway, we want to give our 2023-2024 Executive Committee a chance to tell you, in their own words, why they volunteer and what makes AWCI special to them. Say hello to AWCI Vice President Johnny Barnes.
How long has your company been a member?
44 years
How long have you been involved?
I have been involved in some capacity for at least the last 25 years.
Why are you involved?
One of the primary motivations is my genuine passion for the construction industry. There is something rewarding about taking a blank canvas and creating different spaces that heal, treat, educate or provide happiness to others with an aesthetically pleasing touch. Jimmy Taylor got me into the construction industry and took a chance on me and gave me an opportunity to better my family and my life. The vested interest that he, Tim Wies, Mark Nabity, Steve Baker, Jeff Thomas and many others took in me many years ago left a mark that I can only hope to be able to repay. By volunteering for AWCI, I have the opportunity to connect with individuals who are equally dedicated to advancing our industry's standards, knowledge and best practices but most importantly share lessons learned to help teach and mold the next generation of leaders to be better than my generation.
What is the value of membership for you?
Being part of the AWCI family opens doors to an extensive network of professionals and industry leaders, a front-row seat to the latest products and trends, an opportunity to expand your knowledge base, as well as gain exposure to different industry leaders from across the nation that have perspectives on approaches that differ from your own.
Why should others get involved?
If you’re interested in pursuing your passion, learning from industry peers and making impactful contributions while expanding your professional network, this organization is for you.

Former US Secretary and CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, Julián Castro and Noramay Cadena (Managing Partner, Supply Change Capital; Cofounder and Managing Partner, MiLA Capital; Board Director, Latino Community Foundation, CARE) joined NACD Northern California's Latino Cafecito today to dive into a dynamic discussion about how Latino directors are spearheading the flow of capital, both philanthropic and investment-oriented, to uplift their community and foster entrepreneurial growth.
The session, moderated by Sandra R. Hernández, M.D. (President and CEO, California HealthCare Foundation; Board Director, 23andMe Inc., California Health Care Foundation, California Office of Health Care Affordability, National Academy of Medicine Leadership Consortium) was important in highlighting the importance of the Latino community in the U.S. and how board directors and philanthropists can support the pursuit of economic and social impact in this community. Key takeaways and the full recording can be found below:
💡 Gain Support for Latino Representation Using Data💡
☑ Encourage your boards to evaluate the representation of Latinos on the board and executive team with the economic data to back it.
- Note the significant underrepresentation of Latinos on corporate and public-serving boards, with less than 5% of Fortune 500 board seats held by Latinos despite making up 40% of California's population.
- A UCLA study shows If Latinos in the U.S. were an independent country, their GDP would be the world’s fifth largest, outpacing the UK, France and India. This type of data can support advocacy for increased focus on Latino talent and showcase the power of Latino consumers.
💡Be Your True Self in the Boardroom💡
☑ Use your unique personal journey and culture as your superpower to provide a new perspective for your boards and companies, and be your true self to help the community.
💡Do Your Part for the Latino Community💡
☑ Explore collaborations with organizations like the Latino Community Foundation and Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA) Foundation to boost representation and impact.
☑ Harness your network and relationships to expand the reach and effectiveness of upcoming Latino leaders. Be proactive and not reactive in making introductions.
☑ Encourage allies to use their influence to bring Latino voices into decision-making rooms and advocate for equitable representation in private markets.
Leverage the philanthropic and economic power of the Latino community, which currently receives only 1.1% of philanthropic donations.
Thank you to the generous support of our partner Tara Tays, Pay Governance LLC to showcase our commitment to advocating for Latinos in the boardroom.

/From NPA Miami/ - Objections during enrollment conversations are natural and should be expected and welcomed. This person raised their hand for PACE - we must help. Today Robert Greenwood and I will be talking about why we get these objections, a simple QQQ+Feel/Felt/Found framework to meet the objection in real-time, and how to gather ammunition and data for both conversations and leadership team. Helping school leaders raise achievement, progress and aspirations of their students and staff through literacy interventions and whole school literacy programmes.
Everyone of us at Lexonik - literacy at the speed of sound is determined to live by our mantra that nobody should be limited because they can't read. Therefore it was obvious for us to join the National Literacy Trust business pledge.
A collective approach is needed if we're going to close the literacy gap once and for all, so I'm proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with my fellow business leaders in this vital development.
If you haven't signed up yet, especially if you're a Teesside business, please consider doing so. I'd love for us to work together on making it so that nobody is limited because they can't read.
