Rugby, Qatar and human rights.. The IRFU should spare a thought for human rights there The Daily Telegraph reports that Ireland will compete in what has been termed rugby’s Super Bowl from 2026 However what about Qatar’s appalling record on human rights. What perhaps the IRFU, which receives considerable Irish tax payer support, should also have addressed was Qatar continued abuse of the right to freedom of expression and silencing its media. Migrant workers continued to face wage theft, forced labour and exploitation. Women continued to face discrimination in law and practice. Discriminatory laws put LGBTI people at risk of detention which will make for interesting discussion at its new wider gender Board in Lansdowne road It’s sports washing. Perhaps the blazers at the IRFU could have a gander at the following Amnesty’s report before packing for Qatar. It raises ethical questions. Again, like the Olympics this year the accountability and continued provision of public funds from an Irish government strongly committed to upholding human rights elsewhere in the region requires debate. https://lnkd.in/dF4TQ4Xx.

Transformative Strategy Executive | Specialist in Complex System Design | Mentor | Not-for-Profit Founder | All round impassioned human
It's really time that we see the world for what it is and to want, demand and act for a better one. When we talk about rights, in 'theory' we mean a moral or legal entitlement to have or be able to do something. When we talk about human rights, in 'theory' we mean a set of principles concerned with equality and fairness. When we talk about equality in 'theory' we mean recognising that, as human beings, we all have the same value. But let's own it. There is no equality really if your definition of equality is based on a superiority complex of what is right and wrong, acceptable or unacceptable. Let's stop pretending. It's exhausting to keep up a narrative that reflects nothing of our reality. We have one of the most powerful nations in the world defining the rights of Muslim women differently based on I dare say the patriarchal narrative of a few shitty men and an ignorance of a faith that is so much more that what you wear on your head. This is the host nation promoting on their website: "The three values of olympism are excellence, RESPECT and friendship. They constitute the foundation on which the olympic movement builds its activities to promote sport, CULTURE and education with a view to building a better world". Beliefs aside, if this were any other group of women we would be outraged. We'd have a resurgence of #meetoo. We would talk about the long and hard fight of feminism. We would talk about women not being dictated to by men in power. But the reality is that even in our fight for women's rights there is no equality. Their is no nuanced and sophisticated conversation of what 'equity' means. Our rights as women are upheld when we chose and want to wear 'a little' because that is what is deemed acceptable to the empires of the world. The colonialist structures in which we live which define how we should look and sound. In the same breath we have no hesitation to turn our backs on that same right 'to wear alot'. You may say, hey we have lots of women in hijab in the workplace and in positions of power. Whatever do you mean? To which I would tell you to open your eyes, look around and see where the glass ceilings are and where the ceilings are not so glass. You only have to scratch the surface to see that our tokenism is rife. Inequality is entrenched and ignorance is critical to maintaining this 'progressive' facades. There is nothing progressive about oppression. So let's dial down the delusion and demand a different conversation. Ibtihaj Muhammad #diversity #inclusion #equality #dei #feminism #rights #womensrights #islamaphobia #boycottolympics2024
France's decision to enforce a hijab ban for its athletes in the 2024 Paris Olympics is deeply concerning. As 2016 U.S. Olympic fencing medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad highlighted, debates around Muslim head coverings in sports are rooted in racism and Islamophobia. This policy not only infringes on religious freedoms but also perpetuates discrimination. We must stand in solidarity with Muslim athletes and advocate for their right to compete without compromising their faith. 🌍✊🏽 #LeadingWhileMuslim #DEI #Inclusion #EndIslamophobia #LetThemPlay

Dear Mothobi Mvala, First and foremost, I want to make it clear that you are not a "cow" in any way. Football is a game filled with mistakes, and everyone, even legends like Steven Gerrard, has made costly errors. Your mistake yesterday against Cape Town City doesn't define you as a bad football player. My heart is still torn asunder, we could not grab hold the "Invincible Status" like Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, just to mention but a few, as a die-hard fan of Mamelodi Sundowns. We should forgive and move on, even the bible posits that. "To err is human to forgive divine", so does go the saying from “An Essay on Criticism,” by Alexander Pope. Don't be too hard on yourself, mister Mvala. Your contributions to Mamelodi Sundowns have been significant, yet often overlooked by some ungrateful beings. People tend to focus on the small percentage of mistakes rather than the majority of excellent work you've done. I am finding life mysterious. You can do 95% of excellent job, you make a mere one or two mistakes, all your great work is forgotten and you are painted with a negative brush. Mystery I cannot unravel. Stay positive, boy. We still have the #NedbankCupFinal ahead, and your presence will be invaluable. You are among the best defenders this country has ever seen, and your legacy will be remembered. Despite facing injuries, you've shown resilience and dedication that deserve more recognition. #Sundowns Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. 💛💛👆👆

Supporting the All Blacks over the Springboks can be seen as more patriotic for a coloured, black, or African individual because it rejects the historical association of the Springboks with apartheid and white supremacy. During apartheid, the All Blacks faced sanctions and backlash for touring South Africa, including: - The 1976 All Blacks tour was met with international protests and boycotts - The 1981 All Blacks tour sparked the famous Flour Bomb protest in New Zealand - The International Rugby Board (IRB) imposed sanctions on South African rugby in 1984 By supporting the All Blacks, individuals acknowledge this history and the team's stance against apartheid. In contrast, supporting the Springboks can be seen as condoning or ignoring this painful history. Choosing the All Blacks is a declaration of independence from apartheid's legacy, making it a more patriotic act.

Celebrating the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Koori Knockout this Weekend: A Cultural and Economic Powerhouse during Indigenous Business Month 🏉✨ As we embrace Indigenous Business Month this October, it's important to highlight not just the stories of entrepreneurs, but also community events that play a significant role in cultural and economic empowerment. One such event is the annual NSW Koori Knockout—an iconic rugby league tournament that unites Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the state and beyond. 🖤💛❤️ The NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Koori Knockout is far more than just a rugby league competition. It's a powerful celebration of Aboriginal identity, culture, and self-determination, bringing together thousands of families, players, and fans. This grassroots event showcases not only the sporting talent of Aboriginal people but also the rich cultural traditions, resilience, and the strength of our communities. 💪🏾🌏 But the Koori Knockout is also a significant economic engine, driving opportunities for Aboriginal businesses and enterprises. From food stalls to cultural artisans, local service providers to corporate sponsors, the event offers a platform for Aboriginal businesses to connect with their communities and gain visibility in front of a large audience. 🍽️🎨📈 The Koori Knockout creates a cultural and economic ripple effect, offering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs a unique space to showcase their work while fostering economic growth and community wealth. 💼🌱 Integrating the spirit of the Koori Knockout into Indigenous Business Month is a natural fit. Congratulations to Ghana for winning the African Amputee football cup of nations.A back-to-back victory, following their 2021 win in Tanzania, is a testament to their dedication and passion for the sport. However, amidst the celebrations, I want us to turn our attention to the plight of the Cameroon amputee national team. Their absence from this tournament due to financial constraints is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by these athletes who strive to represent Cameroon on the international stage. I visited some of these players and I must say it hasn't been easy following the tournament. For these players, participating in such tournaments represents the pinnacle of their careers. The chance to compete against other nations, showcase their skills, and bring honor to their country is a dream they have worked tirelessly to achieve. Missing out on this opportunity not only dashes their hopes but also denies them the recognition they rightfully deserve. Tournaments like the African Cup of Nations provide a platform for talent development, exposure, and scouting. When our team is unable to participate, we lose a chance to nurture future stars and elevate the sport within our borders. It is time for football authorities to take decisive action. We implore them to: Provide adequate funds for such international competitions, that too on tjme. Financial constraints should never hinder our athletes' participation. Proper funding ensures that teams can prepare adequately, travel, and compete without unnecessary stress. Let us prioritize investment in our amputee football program. We must streamline Administrative Processes The bureaucratic hurdles faced by our players—such as visa delays—are unacceptable. Authorities must streamline administrative processes, ensuring that paperwork does not stand in the way of their dreams. It's important to champion Equality. Amputee footballers deserve the same respect, attention, and opportunities as their able-bodied counterparts. Let us break down barriers and create an inclusive environment where all athletes thrive. **#AmputeeFootball #SportsEquality #CameroonPride https://lnkd.in/enEPBVWk
