It may not be the whole solution but completely agree with Willie Watt PPRIAS that this is a giant leap forward. It is really important that clients embrace it. We are currently monitoring public sector tenders to understand where the potential obstacles might be. Particularly interested in how abnormally low bids are being managed. Critical to halting the current race to the bottom.

PUBLIC PROCUREMENT - AN IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD? Speak to most architects and they will say that public procurement in Scotland is broken or at best dysfunctional, which stresses the construction industry, introducing risk. I therefore welcome the Scottish Government's publication of the Graduated Pricing Mechanism or GPM for short. I think it can help to resolve many of those ills. I think it is a big step forward. For some time I have been contributing to the Construction Leadership Forum’s Sustainable Pricing Sub-working Group liaising with partners across the industry in both the public and private sectors. From those discussions it is clear that the Graduated Pricing Mechanism (GPM) has the broad backing of the professions and the wider construction industry, and that there is a desire for it to move rapidly from guidance to roll out across projects. It’s surprising, but not entirely shocking, to hear National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB)’s survey reveal that 50% of candidates feel mentors didn’t help them achieve licensure. However, when you dig into the reasons behind this, it becomes clear—though still disheartening.   At GTM Architects & GTM|DC, we believe mentorship is vital to the architectural licensure journey. We take pride in having the knowledge, resources, and support that many emerging architects struggle to find, as highlighted in the report.   I’m excited to be part of a firm that’s bucking this trend, and I’m confident we can help ensure the industry offers robust mentorship and better access to licensure for everyone. “There is no fate but what we make for ourselves." (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) There seems to be an underlying, perhaps even unconscious attitude that pervades the profession,(or at least in some key quarters) – that we’re in a situation of 'the managed decline' of the architect in our culture. If such beliefs permeate enough people and organisations, they start to become treated as a facts, or at least inevitabilities..... But this notion of managing decline is actually only a belief and a belief that must be challenged. Instead of raising the white flag, why not exploit every possible opportunity to develop a new position for the architect’s role? It’s true that the clock can’t be turned back, but the potential exists to create a renewed and revitalised role going forward. This requires a different way of thinking. As Einstein said, ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’ Which means approaching the future role and situation of the architect with a different mindset, something I’ve focused on in my work at Manchester Society of Architects. Acting as a unified team and developing a different way has paid significant dividends in terms of the society’s success. We can’t maintain a vague hope that things will improve, we have to create the conditions where things can improve. Without decent fees and salaries and an advancement in the status of the architect in the value chain, we’ll be reduced to waving banners, rather than having the power to influence or drive change in wider social/societal issues. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Today, representatives from NCARB, the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, and the New Zealand Registered Architects Board signed a new Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) that will expand access to opportunities for international architects. The updated agreement will allow more qualified architects to venture into an increasingly global marketplace by reducing common barriers to eligibility—such as extended experience requirements and limited paths to licensure/registration and reciprocity. RICS Governing Council 2024: Turning Setbacks into Progress 🚀 It took a while to form this post following our election defeat. But, people keep asking, “Did you win GC?” The answer is no. We didn't win this time, but our journey was never just about GC —it’s about creating something far bigger 🌍 Growing up in Oldham, I learned that setbacks don’t define us. Resilience is everything. It’s how we rise that matters, and I’ve carried that lesson with me throughout my career 👊 It's true, that in many ways, the surveying profession is stuck in old ways, but real change doesn’t come from theory—it comes from action. I’ve been delivering on the ground, making things happen 🏗️ We face huge challenges—net zero, the skills gap—but these challenges are opportunities. To meet them, we need fresh perspectives and bold thinking 💡 Working within a small organisation, I’ve embraced the challenge of being the underdog, expanding the impact of our campaign and reaching far and wide beyond what our size represents. As my grandad Arnold, who worked on Spitfires, taught me: the smallest part can make the biggest difference ✈️ As we move forward, I'll begin widening reach to include ALL built environment professionals: architects through the RIBA and all of my architecture network ❤️, construction managers through The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and project managers Association for Project Management and all those of new voices from the next generation who have yet to be heard.
