Simulation is of a pulsed laser welding an Al alloy t-joint with beam defocus, tracking temperature and melt volume. I always find it interesting to watch the "stacked dime" effect created during welding processes driven by metal convection and solidification with the interplay of recoil and marangoni forces. It's a very challenging phenomena to model given the truly multiphysics nature. In the webinar next week my colleague Garrett Clyma is going to go into the detail of how we do this stuff in FLOW-3D WELD. #welding #manufacturing #metals
