It was great to have Will's insights in the first workshop of our new Let's Get Real programme. Our group will be experimenting around aspects of digital and value over the next few months. There's so much rich thinking around this topic, and so many issues to unpick around expectations, practice, capacity, skills, strategy and more. Our challenge now, is how to focus in on the starting points for each of our wonderful cohort organisations. We'll share learning as we go...

I enjoyed speaking to a range of organisations from the cultural industry yesterday at the “Let’s Get Real: Using Digital To Add Value” event at University of Leicester Department for Museum Studies. This was the opening event of an action-research programme launched by The Audience Agency in collaboration with The Institute of Digital Culture. Anra Kennedy and Jane Finnis did a fantastic job organising and hosting the event, Ross Parry gave a great introductory talk followed by some inspiring presentations by Oliver Mantell and Bob Christer. It was interesting to meet participants from such a diverse range of organisations like the National Trust, University of Oxford, National Museum Wales, National Museums Scotland, The Box, Plymouth, Museum of the Home, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru, Wessex Museums, Edinburgh International Festival, and more! The contemporaries of Luca Pacioli, the Italian Franciscan Friar who introduced double-entry accounting in 1494, must be seething with envy if they learn that double-entry accounting is still modern even during the 21st century while their works are considered Renaissance classical. Even Baroque is more modern than Renaissance and it sounds much better https://lnkd.in/eA9V3YuG.

Fostering Creative Partnerships: Artistic & Strategic Planning, Concert Dramaturgy, Producer - it's all about the Music
Some time ago I wrote down some thoughts about the classical music scene and their Green credentials as well as a few interesting resources I had discovered along the way: https://lnkd.in/ec2_JREt . I thought I add this guide below to the mix (which I only just came across) as I believe the more info we have and the more ideas we share the better. Here is to reducing our carbon footprint - one sustainable action at a time. (Creative Carbon Scotland)

Interesting findings from this Department for Culture, Media and Sport report released this week for engagement in Arts, Heritage and Culture England & Wales. If you have not got time time to read the full report here are some key stats I found interesting 🤔 🎭📚🏰🖼 🏛 ; - 91% of adults engaged with the arts at least once in the last 12 months 🎭 - The most popular way to engage with the arts physically was reading books or magazines (64%). This was followed by cinema screening of a film or movie (55%) and a theatrical performance (39%) 📚 - Respondents who did not engage with the arts were asked why they did not. The most common reasons given were: For physical engagement, ‘No reason in particular’’ (28%) and ‘I’m not interested in cultural or arts activities’ (24%). 🤷♀️ - 69% of adults reported having engaged with the heritage sector in the last 12 months. 🏰 - 46% engaged with museums and galleries in the last 12 months, a 10 percentage point increase from 2022/23 (36%) 🏛

" Techno is an invention of the cultural and musical progressions of the predominantly Black youth in and around Detroit in the mid-'80s. [..] On March 13th, Germany expanded its UNESCO Cultural Heritage list to include six new entries. [..] In its press release, the German Commission said techno "is based on various musical developments" and "emerged" from "DJ culture" to become "the soundtrack of the spirit of optimism after [German] reunification." These are bold claims to make while also failing to mention Detroit or the genre's founders. [..] According to UNESCO, an "understanding of the intangible cultural heritage of different communities helps with intercultural dialogue, and encourages mutual respect for other ways of life." This is infuriating when you consider techno's origins. [..] You only need to look at the state of the world in 2024 to see the answers. It's the same mentality that allows people to demand respect for Ukra!ne while remaining silent on the plight of P4l3stine and the countless h0rrors that occur in Africa to make Western life convenient. Quick lip service, a batch of token bookings and corporate sponsorships will be paraded around as progress—but there needs to be more. It's bigger than just nightlife and UNESCO honours. There needs to be a shift in consciousness, a new reckoning in how we live and act to mend these wounds. " https://lnkd.in/gb3mq8c8 Tajh Morris | Resident Advisor

How are beauty, truth and goodness fundamentally linked to the universal values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Daniel Asia, president of The Center for American Culture and Ideas, sat down with us to share how they promote American intellectual engagement. He explains, “We also believe that all politics is downstream of culture. If you do not understand the arts, you will not understand the relationship between culture and politics. People who are elevated by the arts will come to politics with a different sensibility than those who are not. Most importantly, it gives more and greater meaning to their lives.” https://bit.ly/3OBHpJY

Here it is: "Governments have no problem throwing billions at other industries." I went to a talk the other day that spoke of the need to transcend the "industrial" mindset of arts leadership. While I sympathize with the impulse, I reject the premise: Canada, the Provinces, and municipalities have *never* treated arts and culture funding like industrial policy, nor have arts and culture institutions spoken of themselves as an industry. We're a "sector." Or worse, a "community." Rather than working to transcend, I'm focused on shifting the mindset towards arts policy as industrial policy. Performing arts is a multi-billion dollar industry, within an even larger multi-billion dollar cultural industry. It's time to start thinking of ourselves this way, and working with government on political and policy projects that treat us like the economic and societal drivers we are. To do less is to shoot ourselves in the collective foot. https://lnkd.in/eMpUepZM
