This evening’s SMART Recovery Ireland meeting was really moving for me as a Facilitator for all the right reasons. In the check in part some participants spoke about the challenges they are facing with a particular loved one: A family member, partner, friend and others. As I was listening, it came to my mind to promote a conversation about “Detaching with love”. So I asked “Detaching with love, what does it mean for you?” There was no right or wrong answer, the idea was to open the space for them to realise what they have been doing to protect themselves, their feelings and emotions. And oh my god! What a fascinating conversation they all created. One of the definitions by Psychology Today is: “Detachment with love means caring enough about others to allow them to learn from their mistakes”. It also means “Stepping back from obsessively worrying about others, telling others what to do, and trying to rescue them from the consequences of their choices.” It is not an easy thing to do because we love those people. However, detaching with love shows how much we love them. It sounds paradoxically, but it is so true. Sometimes it requires a lot of internal work, but believe me it is a masterful emotional skill to have and rely on. I can attest to that - hands down. It was a fantastic meeting and the contribution everyone made was more than valuable. For me, a lot of food for reflection. As a Facilitator, I am hugely impacted.
